3/4 Tuition at Georgetown vs 1/2 tuition at Vanderbilt

Post by dangurllydogo2hrvrd » Thu Mar 29, 2018 12:50 pm

After factoring in COA...

Georgetown: 135k in loans
Vanderbilt: 131k in loans

Goals: Big Law - Civil Litigation

Region: DC, NY, Atlanta, Charlotte, Texas - preference in the southern states only because my dollar goes farther there = big house. Nonetheless, I'm really open to working in the North because it's fast paced, and I like fast paced.

Side note: I wasn't too pleased after my Vanderbilt visit: too country and too slow paced for me. I will visit Georgetown soon.

These are peer schools with pretty similar outcomes. Vandy will place better in the South, GULC in DC/NY. Your odds of reaching that career goal are nearly equal at the two. Those prices are essentially the same. Go where you're happier.

Agree with Stranger. If you want the south, pick Vanderbilt. Anywhere else, pick Georgetown.

+1 to everything that has been said. There's no clear winner here. Visit Georgetown and pick where you think you'll be happiest

OP, the reason this important is because happy people perform better at nearly everything

being happier will help you both with grades and OCI

Thanks everyone. I do want to eventually end up in the south. I wonder how firms go about transferring their employees after, let's say, 5 years of work.

OP I think you're post is missing some pretty crucial information. Namely:

(1) Your LSAT Score and GPA
(2) Whether you're a K-JD

I think the question you should be asking isn't "which of these 2 options should I take" but "are either of these options good for my goals." It seems like most people ITT think they are pretty good for what you've outlined, but depending on your situation, TCR might actually be neither.

I'm actually kind of surprised at how LSL seems to be treating these kinds of questions way differently than the-website-that-shall-not-be-named. RETAKE! was the go-to response in almost every situation, no one has even mentioned it here so far.

Part of that may well be that this year is markedly different from past years in as much as Congress is contemplating serious changes to the student loan regime. It also may be that the new site is taking a kinder, gentler approach -- the RETAKE! default had a really harsh flavor to it.

You bring up a really good point, however, as crazy as it sounds, I don't want to take a break. I am also k-JD with internship experience.

I never got the obsession with retaking, anyway. It's a good idea in some cases (and in a subset of those cases, an extremely good idea)--but I think those cases are not THAT common.

As for the two options here-- +1 to Platopus's comments.
