3.4/167 (When to Apply)

Post by MichiganHoosier » Thu Jul 30, 2020 9:55 am

I finally was able to take the LSAT, and I scored a 167. While not my best, I’m grateful to have taken it as I’m in Baghdad and otherwise would not of had the opportunity. However, a 167 is my overall average from the last few months of study.

Having a 3.4, I’m not necessarily where I want to be. I’m signed up for the August LSAT, where scores will be released mid-September. My question is, should I apply right when apps open up? Or should I wait until I get the results from the August LSAT?

Background: Army Officer with 6 years in. I’ve worked some interesting jobs with a few years spent between Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria (currently enjoying the 125 degree heat). Geographically flexible and at this time trying to get in to the best law school I can. Full Post 9/11 GI Bill.

If scores are released mid-September, there’s no need to apply before that. Any time before Halloween is early, and I’m not even sure apps open up much before September first. Mid-September will still be really early. (stay cool!)

Mid-September is so early, some schools won't even have their apps open. Your timing won't be a factor against you for that application date.

If you don't improve on the 167 (which I'm sure you will!), then Georgetown (or UTexas, if you'd like to live in Texas) ED is an intriguing option thanks to the GI Bill, and their ED apps stay open late enough that you would have that August score to make an informed decision. Both schools would be happy to lock in a 167 for full tuition and mylsn says you'd have a pretty good shot, although the sample size is tiny. Anything higher-ranked is probably a dead letter with 3.4/167 so there's not a lot of downside.
