No chance, right?

Post by holapade » Sun Jan 06, 2019 9:11 pm

Hi All:

Quick question: you can't get a SCOTUS clerkship with median grades from a T-2 no matter who recs you, right? I've heard anecdotal stories from folks at my school about some individuals who managed to pull it off but I just don't believe it.

Unlikely in the extreme even at most T14.

If the recommender is somehow Ginni Thomas, might be possible. Otherwise very, very unlikely.

Those people are lying/deluded.

You can go to Wikipedia and look up a list of SCOTUS clerks and see where they went to school. Thomas is pretty much the only judge who hires outside the T14*, and those students are going to be super accomplished and at to be the top of the class. Sotomayor hired someone from the U of Hawaii who was EIC of law review and looks to have been #1 in her class (but otherwise she seems to stick to the elite schools as well).

*most SCOTUS clerks are going to be from the top half of the T14

The #1 person in your class has very little chance.

Based on their post from the other site, I think the OP is saying that he/she attends Yale or Stanford but phrased it weirdly (no one refers to YS as T-2). I can't imagine anyone at a TT would be discussing other median students clerking for SCOTUS.

Median at Yale is at least plausible if you can get the right people to really rep you, and then get lucky. I wouldn't be shocked if it's happened often enough over the past few decades for students to have stories about it.
