Columbia Law School Class of 2022 Applicants

Post by Gevamna » Thu Aug 23, 2018 10:22 am

Pasting last year's thread and will update with new information.

Note: Columbia offers both need and merit- based financial aid. They will negotiate with offers from peer schools, and it is possible to receive both types of aid even if you do not get the Hamilton or Butler.

Application status: First RD (admitted) Wave - Jan. 18, notification via email

Looking at last year's LSN info:

They had their first wave (admits only) 1/18, then acceptances rolled through the next two weeks. Then there was the first wave of WLers 2/8. Rejections sorta sprinkled in until mid-late April.

Checking in! Columbia noted that they’d like an addendum if you’ve taken more than once, so be aware of that.

Are you going to be submitting LSAT addendum to all schools or just here? I jumped 18 points, and was thinking of including one with all apps

I jumped 13 points last year and didn't include an addendum. They did ask about it in my interview, and I was admitted later on. If it's a concise addendum, adding it to all schools seems like a good idea.

I've deferred my admission to the class of 2022. Let me know if you have any questions about my experience applying last year.

I don't have a great reason, I took it cold first time. Guess I'll just say that?

Oh got you. Yeah, in your case I'd probably just say that. Shouldn't hurt you much, if at all

Has anyone gotten (or successfully solicited) a fee waiver from CLS?

Checking in! I got a fee waiver but it was just for having an LSAC fee waiver, to answer the above question.

Thank you! Is there anything that you think led to your being chosen for the Hamilton? Just numbers, or have you gleamed some sort of insight about soft factors that they’re looking for in your time there?

Not ugg, but I'm a CLS 1L with a few friends (here/at UChi/SLS/HLS); we were all pretty above both 75ths with no Hammy. None of us even got a Butler either,if I recall correclt,y so for us it seemed a Hammy's are numbers + something else.

Then again, we all applied last year, and that applicant pool may have contributed to higher competition for named schollys. Best of luck to all of you!

Thank you. I guess I’ll just have to hope that I somehow have that “something else”. Can I ask how your first couple weeks as a 1L have been? Any immediate impressions or surprises?

Not at CLS, but chiming in to say that I’m fairly confident that CLS considers work experience for named scholarships. I was awarded the Butler last year with 173/3.97 & 3 years of work experience. A fellow applicant with identical numbers who lived in the same state as me did not receive the award. It’s certainly not definitive proof that work experience was the determining factor, but WE was really the only difference between us on paper.

i have no idea how i got a hamilton. i had like 173/3.8 and one year of work experience as a paralegal. i had a pretty good interview. that's pretty much all i got.

Did anyone else notice in the "LSAT/GRE" section of the application they only give you spots to enter two scores? I have three, so I guess I'll have to call and ask how they'd like me to fill that part out. Weird that they ask for it when LSAC sends the scores to them anyway.
