GPA Addendum Question/Chances

Post by UnionThug » Fri Aug 03, 2018 11:25 am

My last transcript was just added to CAS and I got my official GPA - a 3.2. I will be writing an addendum because I was very sick for about a year in college which tanked my GPA. Looking at the report, well over 1/2 of my credits are "A Hours Earned", with the rest split between Bs & Cs. Is this something I should point to in my addendum? It also gives me the average LSAT score for my school and I'm 26 points higher than that(currently 168, PTing 170s before July, and probably retaking in September). I'm really hoping that my GPA won't give me too much trouble, but I am lost at what to write. Any guidance is appreciated! My dream in UVa and I'm a VA resident

Just explain the circumstances of your illness, point out that your low grades were all during that period, and you believe the remainder of your grades more accurately reflect your ability/potential for academic success. Don’t go on or try to make a case; just give them the context they need to understand your academic history better.

Unfortunately your gpa will still matter because they don’t get to report the reasons for the low gpa to USNWR, but if you can get your LSAT up and they need your LSAT score, it will help give them a reason to pick you over someone without an explanation.

Echoing the above, and also check lsn to see how this cycle went for people with numbers similar to yours.

A quick glance at UVA 2017/2018 applicants with similar stats:
3.27/167 -> WL
3.22/168 that was WL -> Rejected
3.22/175 -> WL
2.7/175 was accepted
3.21/171 was accepted as well.

Best of luck!

I looked at lsn for the past few cycles and it seems to be about split between acceptances and waitlists. I'm a VA resident and I'm considering EDing, but I really just want to make sure the rest of my application is the best it can be. Thanks!

Thank you! I think I have my addendum done, so now I'm moving on to the diversity statement and personal statement
