Hi, thank you for taking the time to answer! I hear mixed opinions about how UT places for biglaw. Some say that UT is the best for Texas BL and that median can get BL in Houston with ease, while others say that T12>UT for Texas BL. The employment reports from 2017 tend to favor the latter, with 35.5% BL and 8.9% FC (making it hard to believe that a median can have a decent shot at BL anywhere).

What is your opinion after studying at UT? Do your classmates seem to have difficulties getting BL offers in Texas if that is what they want? And what is the cutoff for them typically?

Thanks in advance!

So this is a huge question but I’ll do my best.

I really don’t think UT can be beat for entry into TX big law. That said, there are firms that hire from outside Texas. These tend to be satellite offices though. Whereas the “big six” (VE, BB, NRF, HAK, JW, Bracewell) tend to be more focused on Texas schools like UT/UH/SMU. Also it depends on Texas market. Dallas is heavy UT/SMU/Baylor, Austin is UT and out of state, Houston is very broad.

That being said, I have classmates at or slightly below median who have biglaw lined up. But they are also very personable and likely interview well. They also hustled. Bottom third is a hard no go, but top third is no guarantee either. But a median UT student with a good personality who shows commitment to a Texas market likely has the same, or better, shot than a top-25% student elsewhere in the t14.

Hope that helps.

I'm not generally a great interview, but even considering that, I bombed this one pretty bad.

UT grad and practicing ESTEEMED BIG TEXAS LAWYER here, also happy to answer any questions if that’s helpful.

I think all else equal you should take a T14 over UT if you want Texas big law. Even hot garbage schools like Georgetown are going to give you a better shot. But I truly mean all else is equal (you’ve got ties to Texas, you’re smart about your job search, money is the same, etc., etc.) Nothing is ever truly equal so you’ve just gotta plug everything into the calculus and see what comes out. Might be UT, might be UofH, might be some random “Law Center” in Washington D.C.

I’m probably out of touch though (I was unaware that Texas had a “Big 6” law firms for example) so heaping salt grains upon salt grains should probably be taken when reading anything I write.

Sorry to hear. What was it like? It just says "three video questions, one written question". Is it a min per question like Northwestern? What in the world is the written question?

pretty generic stuff, i'd imagine it varies by person but you have a ton of time for the written one and the spoken ones are pretty short

If you take the middle line between both my advice (a meager law student) and big zuck (an esteemed LAW-YER) you get have good grades and a good personality and go to YLS.

Also a UT grad and also a PREFTIGIOUS practicing biglawyer. UT should give everyone in the top 60 or 70% a shot at TX biglaw, but it's just that.. a shot. No guarantees. Top 1/3 could strike out because oil prices dip or interviewers don't like the bolo tie you're wearing during a screener. UT still gives good outcomes for non-biglaw, and tuition/scholarships are generally better than GULC/Cornell, which are options for many people admitted to UT, so it's not all doom and gloom.

General advice is to retake for Duke/UVA and target Texas, or play those admissions against UT for more scholly $$$. Don't take out 200k to go to either of those schools and don't assume biglaw from UT. Good luck have fun?

(source: had top 1/3 grades at OCI (i think?), targeted Texas, hustled, struck out in TX, landed biglawl elsewhere)

(disclaimer: I am also out of touch)

Got an interview request. Non-resident, went complete around the third week of October. Is this like northwestern’s interview?

What’s the written about? Is it like what’s one thing you would change in the world or some sociopolitical question like that

I’m OOS and the interview qs which I remember were when did you know you wanted to be an attorney/why law, what is one passion outside of law, and my written was why texas. I was advised to submit a Why Texas and wish I had listened lol I prob wouldn’t have had to do the interview. It wasn’t tough but I feel like I did a lot better on NU’s.
