Post by KENYADIGG1T » Sat Jul 28, 2018 2:32 pm

Didn't see a URM thread for this coming cycle, so I decided to start one?

Polls incoming.

I feel this in a big way. I’ve been thinking of starting this thread for the past few months but was afraid of looking too eager

Would y'all recommend writing Why X's for every school even though they might not require it?

From Penn to Duke, YES. Cornell and Northwestern asl for it in their apps now as well.

But it’s not 100% necessary. I got the Darrow from Michigan without writing one.

Any AA URM or any URM for that matter sort of include details relevant to a diversity statement in ones personal statement? (i.e. a diversity statement would be redundant?).
I'm thinking of doing Why X law school essays and talk a little about diversity in those.?

Stats: 3.6
LSAT: Hopefully 173+ (July scores come out in 5 days!)

I don't have access to apps yet since they aren't open, but is writing a Why X paragraph sufficient in a PS or is it advisable to write it separately? My bad if this has been answered somewhere else.

Different people have different opinions but I personally needed every pixel possible to write the best PS and DS i could. It was hard to cut out stuff. Because of that, I advise doing it separately. Also I recommend against it because it’ll be entirely too easy to accidentally upload your PS with the Why Michigan to your NYU app.

I’m inclined to agree with principal. I wrote 1 why X and looking back it was probably a waste of time and energy. If you have some burning drive to attend a specific school and feel the need to inform them of that then go for it but I don’t know if I think it adds any substantive value for all of the effort it takes on your part. They know you want them because you spent the money and submitted the application, your PS & DS (along with LORs and numbers) do the job of explaining why they should want you and that’s the biggest part of the game.

I would agree with the above. I used my personal statement to talk about my work experience and solidify a "why law" answer and allowed my DS to tell a personal narrative. Personal statements are around 2 pages double spaced and when you get down to it, it just is not a lot of space. I had to ruthlessly edit and cut down both documents when applying.

For why x essays, only write one if it's going to be a compelling why essay. For certain schools that are concerned with fit I think it can be useful (Virginia, Michigan come to mind other folks can feel free to comment) [Heading to Michigan this fall]. I would strongly warn against writing a template essay that you will copy and paste school names. At best it will not do anything positive for your app and at worst it will be detrimental in having a mediocre essay in your app. I was a below 25th percentile applicant in terms of GPA/LSAT so I placed a value in making sure my essays, resume, LORs were on point. Best of luck to all folks applying. Do it for the culture!

Do y'all know if you qualify for NYU's AnBryce if your parents have foreign college degrees (non 4-year)? Those particular degrees are not recognized in the US. I've read conflicting info on this.

I would just call admissions and ask.
