What was your first law job/salary & where are you now?

Post by Guest » Sun Sep 30, 2018 8:55 pm

So as someone who is thinking about making a career switch to law and taking the leap (into the not so metaphorical pile of debt) I sometimes get worried when people say the job market is horrible. Idk if this is because people aren't getting the prestigious or ideal jobs/starting salary they want or if they are genuinely unemployed and struggling to survive. To be honest if it is the former, I make $41,000 right now in a slightly lower than U.S. average cost of living area, so I could easily live with a job that starts out in the high 50s low 60s although my ideal and dream job would be biglaw 6 figures out of school like most others....

I kind of want to get a survey and be as specific as you want but mainly:
1. Where did you go to law school
2. When did you graduate
3. What was your first law job (or job out of law school if not law related) and salary
4. What is your current job and salary however many years later

I think you'll probably want to add a question that asks whether someone was trying to get biglaw. There are plenty of people who didn't/don't have that as a goal

191k in the federal regulatory agency sounds great. Is it good hours?

1. CCN
2. 2017
3. 180k
4. 190k (big law, but planning on taking a major cut once I hopefully get out of big law in the next year).

Not really informative, but I'm bored:

1. Where did you go to law school: T6
2. When did you graduate: 16
3. What was your first law job (or job out of law school if not law related) and salary: PI fellowship <$45,000
4. What is your current job and salary however many years later: DCt clerk,~$85k

From a top law school I'm a little surprised at the low income. Were you just completely committed to PI and that's why you took the job after law school or was it your only offer? Obviously enjoying what you do is most important, but if that T6 came with a T6 level debt as well, income would matter greatly to me.

Nice to see a TTT doing well despite the odds they say are stacked against you in this job market, especially in a market like NYC. What kind of law might I ask?

Am still committed to PI. Had a handful of offers, took the one that appealed to me most, even though it happened to be the lowest paying of the bunch (although not by much...PI does not pay much across the board). After clerking, will return to a PI job, likely in the ~$55-65k range, at least for a few years. Have massive debt, but also have my school's LRAP and the PSLF, so it doesn't matter too much.

110k isn't exactly a whole lot in NYC, but it's better than nothing. I have had a few biglaw bites (all post-180k raise) and a ton from mid-market firms (130k-160k). While I'd love to make more money, I'd much rather go in house for the broader experience and better lifestyle (I'm not in biglaw, obviously, but I don't exactly have the best work-life balance--billed 190 hours last month).

I'm in commercial and real estate litigation. Small cybersecurity/data privacy work as well.

Nice, what kind of practice area and how did you find your in-house gig? What class year were you when you transitioned?

Asset Management and networking (recruited directly by a non-client as a 3rd year associate). When I took the job, I originally made less than a 3rd year in big law. While I now expect to make more than a 4th year, I don't expect to keep pace year over year with big law compensation.

Sounds awesome. Do you like your in-house role? Is it easier or harder than biglaw?

To add to the question above, so were you doing like funds work in big law? Is that a typical exit for 3rd years? What are your hours like now?

Broader than straight funds, but did a lot of fund work in biglaw. Seems easy enough to exit as a 3rd year to anywhere between a 1st and 3rd year’s comp in major markets. The work is more challenging and more interesting, and the hours are much better—not a 9-5, but I sleep every night and very rarely do significant weekend work. However, long term outcomes are far less certain, and I often consider returning to biglaw while I’m still can—it’s said a lot but it’s really hard to understand from the other side that when you’re in law you’re the producer and you’re what matters—once you’re in business, there’re a lot of considerations and competing forces other than legal, which is just a massive cost center. Also, once in business, your success is really tied and dependent upon those other persons.

1. The local TTT
2. 2016
3. Some dumpster fire of a small firm run by a lunatic. I quit before I was even admitted but I believe it was $55k
4. Still chasing ambulances, 83k + large bonus on my own cases (this adds up big) + smaller percentage of every case I settle (this adds up to "getting Hulu without ads" money). I work like one half Saturday a month, 830 - 6 most days. L

1. Regional T50 School.
2. 2016
3. Small law, 75k, stayed there 3 years.
4. Big law, market salary as a 4th year.

Major market, no niche, just got lucky. The small firm I worked at actually had a great mentor who is widely known in my market and resulted in incredible experience. I tried for big law but bombed OCI.

1. Lewis & Clark
2. 2015
3. In-house and quality control for SPMI non-profit, started 50k, ended 65k, stayed 2 years
4. In-house for mid-size labor union, 80k + pension, paid health for me+spouse, 4 weeks vacation, 9 holidays. Salary is low comparatively to the other labor unions in the area and I'm actually acting as general counsel but not given the title because of weird power trip issues with the business manager, but its still a pretty cushy gig.
