How to buy more time to respond to an inhouse gig offer?

Post by Anon-Posting » Wed Jun 30, 2021 3:46 pm

I received an inhouse offer 2 days ago that I really wanted but am now lukewarm about. I am currently being considered at a few other places, including some large cap companies.

How can I buy myself more time, preferably until next week to respond to an offer? I don't want to engage in salary negotiations until then just so I don't waste my time in case I end up not taking the offer.

You can probably just ask. I’m not sure about the standard for in-house, but for most job offers 2 weeks is an entirely appropriate amount of time to request to consider. And you only need 1.

Politely ask them for more time. Ask for whatever you want plus a few days. So if you want 7 extra days, ask for 10. You want wiggle room.

Tell then you’re “weighing your options” or “talking with family.” Something like that from the Derek Jeter interview playbook.

You should also use the holiday as an excuse.

Do you have any idea how long your other offers will take to come through?
