Biking to Work

Post by 64Fl » Thu Dec 12, 2019 10:53 pm

This may be a dumb question, but here is goes. Do most people wear their dress shoes when biking to work or keep them at their desk? I'm worried about the wear and tear on my dress shoes, but I also don't want to roll into work looking unprofessional.

If you're biking to work, you absolutely shouldn't be wearing dress shoes during the ride. Keep them in your desk, carry them in a shoulder bag, or whatever you have to do to avoid any perceived unprofessionalism, but your dress shoes are not designed to handle anything more than maybe an 1870s highwheel.

You’re gonna scratch them up for sure.

Keep a shoe drawer at work. I wear athletic shoes while commuting to work (I walk) and change when I get in. No one will care if you show up in casual shoes as long as you change once you're at your desk.

Is it the soles that you're worried about (a thin vibram sole or something would probably help) or just the shoes in general (do what others have suggested).

no one at my firm cares if you wear athletic shoes around the office anyway though so i'm unfamiliar with this problem. (think i've seen people walk around with fluffy slippers before as well but that's a little more rare)

Awesome, thanks everyone! Shoes are going under the desk. My firm last summer was an older and more formal establishment, so I didn't get much exposure to seeing people come in/out with athletic shoes. I've switched to a more relaxed market and to a much more "just get the work done" firm, so it's good to know that this shouldn't be unusual there.
