Background Check and Conflicts Process

Post by PokeMan » Wed Sep 25, 2019 8:05 pm

Just accepted an offer to lateral to another firm.

I've never done this before, but curious how long I should expect the background check and conflicts check to take? I'd like to be able to give notice to my current firm as soon as possible, especially because people are trying to staff me on a couple of new projects.

And do I have anything to worry about? No arrests, DUIs or anything like that. No bar discipline either, and good credit.

Shouldn't have anything to worry about. You've accepted a firm offer and it doesn't sound like there's anything in your background check that could jeopardize that.

Any idea how long the background check typically takes?

Has no one one here lateralled before and gone through a background check in biglaw?

I'm almost a week in and not sure if this is typical or not. From everyone I've talked to it usually only takes 48-72 hours.

I’m not in biglaw, but I’ve absolutely had biglaw friends wait weeks and ultimately clear with no issues

Most of the time there’s just no way to know without, idk, asking point blank (in which case I imagine the answer is “we don’t know, we use a third party for these checks” or something). Some of my background checks have taken a small eternity.
