Memo due at Summer Job

Post by ThatOneAfrican » Thu Aug 15, 2019 3:38 pm

This might be a silly question but I might as well ask.
So I'm working at the department of police accountability for the summer and I have a memo to write. My supervisor told me that there's no hard deadline but to aim for the 15th. I thought I'd be done by today but I think it's going to bleed over till tomorrow. Do I need to let her know? Or would submitting it tomorrow and apologizing then be fine?

Always communicate if you're going to miss a deadline. You will annoy the assigning attorney far more if they don't have a heads up and can't plan for a delay.

Tell her today. It's always better to give advance notice of lateness unless you're 100% certain the person involved has forgotten the deadline.
Doesn't matter much here because it's a summer project no one's relying on, but it's a good habit to get into early.

I see, thank you for telling me. Just emailed her, hopefully she's alright with it.

Yeah, what everybody else said. Definitely email. The earlier the better if you know.

I'd probably generalize that when there's no hard deadline and you're just going to be a day or two late, 99.99% of the time the response will be something along the lines of "No problem, thanks for the update." The other .01% of the time where someone actually gets mad... well, you'll know to get the hell out of there and never to work with that person ever again.

The problem usually comes more when you don't let them know, and they have to come to you to ask.

Side note - When you get an assignment, get a deadline. Nothing worse than pushing something to the back burner because it sounded like a non-priority and then having a partner ask why the hell he doesn't have it yet.
