Money v Name... UF, Chi, and NYU

Post by Lizzalou » Thu Mar 14, 2019 12:22 am

Hi guys!

I’m having some trouble deciding where I want to attend in the fall. So far I have gotten into uva with a 25,000 a year scholarship, NYU with 25,000 a year, UF with a full ride plus a stipend to pay my rent, duke and Chicago. I’m still waiting on my offers from duke and Chicago. I think I’m between Chicago, UF, and NYU. I don’t know where I want to live in the future but I do want to practice corporate law leaning towards intellectual property. I just need some advice if the money is worth it for the big name schools? If I go to NYU or Chicago will it be worth it for the debt? I want to know I can pay it off at some point and have good career prospects. If money wasn’t a problem I would go to NYU or Chicago.

Any advice is appreciated!

NYU or UVA unless Duke or Chicago give you a comparable or greater scholarship. UVA would be the debt-minimizing option because of the much lower cost of living compared to NYU. It sounds like you want biglaw, and UF is not going to give you a good enough shot at it to be a wise choice.

For career prospects, you can't really go wrong with UVA, NYU, Chicago, or Duke. I think Chicago probably edges them out by a little bit, and I'd personally go there, but I can't firmly say that until I know how much you're getting from them. If you don't get any money from them, then either NYU or UVA would be perfectly fine.

If you are from Florida and want to practice in Florid, UF isn’t that bad. Otherwise, I would go UVA without knowing anything else

Why is everyone bringing UVA into this thread? I don't see OP talking about UVA as an option.

Damned if the lack of capitalization made that hard to catch. My bad.

I mean, maybe we can write off UVA and Duke because OP already said they were "between Chicago, UF, and NYU" -- a statement further supported by the fact that they didn't care enough to capitalize "uva" or "duke" in the original post. :D

Don't go to UF if you want to do corporate or IP law. You have much better options.

I once visited UF, beautiful campus and Gainesville is close to Tampa/St. Pete. BL firms are plentiful in Fl (without the hassle of billiards) and UF is a top choice. Then of course, coming out of law school with no debt, Priceless.

Oh my god don’t give advice on attending a school because you visited its campus once. Also, people have FREQUENTLY posted here how BL firms actually aren’t at all plentiful in Florida.

If OP were looking to do litigation/real estate, UF would be a more defensible choice (but still not a strong choice for biglaw). Florida doesn't compare to NY, DC, Chicago, Texas, or California with regard to the prevalence of biglaw firms. But the biggest problem for OP is that there isn't much corporate or IP work in Florida BL. There are limited circumstances where I'd recommend a full ride + stipend at UF over the other options, but this certainly isn't one.

Pretty sure Dusty is just relentlessly trolling the on-topics at this point.
