This doesn't make any sense to anyone who doesn't go to Penn. Maybe post in a Penn thread?

Why not post it in the pre-existing Penn c/o 2021 thread? Or "Penn students taking questions" (if we have one)? If you want people who don't go to Penn to weigh in you're going to have to explain what on earth you're actually talking about.

Also in Section 3! Anyone know anything about these professors?
Which professors?
Contracts - D. Hoffman
Torts - A. Hoffman
CivPro - S. Burbank
Burbank is probably the best outcome for Civ Pro. Definitely don't come unprepared to his class, though, as he does not take it easy in his cold calls. As you get closer to October-ish, be sure to chat with upper level students about the differences between what/how he teaches, and what will be in the exams.

Q: How is Penn’s placement in DC, controlling for self-selection? Specifically big-law and boutique litigation?
Thanks!!

Pretty excellent my year — seemed like most folks who wanted it got it. It’s hard to say statistically because the vast majority of Penn people target New York, but having interviewed in NY, Philly, Delaware, and DC I can anecdotally say biglaw there is just as doable with minimal ties. The common wisdom is that you will need higher grades for placement at equivalent firms than you would need in NY, and the few numbers we did have available seemed to bear that out. Just more people competing for the same jobs, so firms are presumably screening a little bit more by the numbers.

P.S. vault rankings are meaningless in DC insofar as they mean anything anywhere. If you care about prestige perception it’s more of a Covington, Wilmer, everyone-else-by-practice-area-reputation type deal, I think. Just check out prior year grade distributions if you want to see relative screener cutoffs. Don’t be afraid to email apply and ask for interviews if you don’t get them in the lottery (obligatory start mass mailing early plug).

Agreed with everything said above. My class just finished OCI, and we have a solid number of people going to DC, and I am pretty sure everyone who genuinely wanted DC (and was reasonably qualified) got something. We place regularly (including this year) everywhere in DC, including W&C, Covington, Wilmer, A&P, etc. etc. Happy to answer any specific questions, but in short, Penn places well in DC.

To add to the above, "boutique litigation" isn't something many go for during OCI. I'll let actual biglaw litigators opine, but my sense is starting out at a boutique immediately after law school isn't the best move. Seems more prudent to start at biglaw and downsize later once you have some baseline skills, in part because more boutique firms will open up for you.
