what kind/field of startup that was? vc funded, if so which round?
New media company that had $12.5 million in seed revenue and was about a year from revenue. Title would have been head of business operations. One of those rare new startups with no tech involved.
Nice, how's the company doing today?

This wasnt too long ago so it's still prerevenue but is on track with what they told me expectations are. It's about 50/50 whether it succeeds.

Wasn't it the same way last summer too?

Probably a combo of many on-topic posters not making the migration from TLS and June/July kinda being dead months for applications since apps aren't open yet. But yeah, there should still be an LSAT study/waiter group with the test coming up in two weeks. Or some waitlist movement over the summer.
i thought last year it was slightly better like you could see at least some on-topics when you click on active threads first page, but i could be wrong. i much miss the old on-topics with constant barrage of posts related to lsat, applications. i couldn't imagine being able to prep without it bc i didn't know anyone irl doing lsat.

how are preppers and applicants managing now?

iirc you went to hls. does that name open doors in your career transition now? could you have tried for MBB placements?

i've been putting in a few hours everyday for the last month, still less than what i'd have liked. have the onsite for the startup this week, my first in this search. hope it'd get the juices flowing.

Good luck dude

I'd be interested in reading a recap if you have time. Always thought suralin's onsite debriefs were interesting and useful.

i had the interview at the startup recently. had 5 rounds.

1st round was a coding q about binary trees and i gave an O(n) approach using bfs. but the interviewer was looking to optimize memory to constant. bfs can at worst be o(n), which is generally acceptable so i am not sure if i gave them that they wanted. second round was a very vague open-ended q related to some infra problem they have. i have no idea what to make of this one still. the interviewer was ex-google but i didn't think he was looking for anything that i've read so far about faang interviews. 3rd one went much better, a question about arrays and another one about BTs. gave optimal succint code and finished this round early.
4th one was one of the most open ended ones i've had. the guy was ex-uber. he asked something related to 'what you'd do to solve the issue of only a few guys observing all of self driving cars on the road from a central location' but didn't look like he was interested solely in the hw/sw aspects of the approaches. last round was simply with the group manager and behavioral.

felt it was kinda laid back but didn't feel like i could be a good fit there. goal was to begin the interviewing grind so was useful in that regard.

can someone knowledgeable about 'callback' in coding explain what it means? i see the term used fairly often and used with different meaning in different programming languages like jscript vs c++.

sounds like you did well!

and idk much about callbacks bc i do my best to avoid javascript, but iirc it's just a function passed as an argument (w a couple nuances) and mostly used in async programming. eg when loading a webpage you don't want your event loop to block waiting on a function to fetch data, so you run stuff in the background while the function is running, and afterward, it "calls back" to the main function or w/e to continue. sometimes callbacks are anonymous functions. i think it has slightly different meaning in different languages bc the intended use and async-ness can be v different

i think their open-ended qs were like a little too open-ended for to be useful for fang tbh. the ex uber's q can go so wide and i think he had degree in entirely different engineering discipline than ee/cs so that did feel a little odd.

in async programming/event loop the term 'calling back' a function made sense to me like this link describes https://codeburst.io/javascript-what-th ... a4da2deced but c++ doesn't do async programming afaik. in c++, i've heard function pointers when passed as func call arguments termed 'callback' but to me it doesn't seem anything like the async model of callback and worker threads.

well in C++ it still basically refers to a function passed as an argument, it’s just that the use case is different: https://stackoverflow.com/a/28689902

yeah it refers to func pointers in c, but i guess the use model/application being much different (no async processing) in c throws me for a loop, pun intended.

heard that there is something called grokking the sys-design for interviews. it costs i think around 100. anyone bought it and found it was helpful? is it worth the cost?

good luck! heard solid things about cruise

and I think I paid for grokking the sys design interview, relatively useful but not necessary. but then again $100 is pocket change compared to EV

interestingly, i've heard opposite things about cruise. source is a current employee who actually fwded my resume to its recruiter. he says too much inconsequential slack messaging expectations which takes too much context switch time wasted and too much growth in last 2 years from like 100 ppl to almost 2k now. i can kinda relate but we are both old could be different for young guns here.

got the amazon onsite invite, trying to schedule it next week.

the opendoor recruiter call was more like a promotional call from a telemarketer than swe recruiting. not sure what to make of it.
