"Trading Up" District Clerkships?

Post by B4L » Fri Apr 03, 2020 10:39 pm

I am currently a 2nd-year associate in a litigation shop in NYC. My goal is to become an AUSA in SDNY or EDNY. I plan to apply to district clerkships for 2021-2022, where I would start with three years firm experience under my belt. I know clerkships in SDNY and EDNY are extremely competitive. With that in mind, I would be willing to clerk in a secondary market; e.g., Denver, Detroit, Nashville, and then apply to work in the SDNY and EDNY for the year after.

1) Would a clerkship from a lesser known district improve my chances to clerk in the SDNY or EDNY? How much?

2) Would clerking twice at the district level look too odd? I would think NYC has the most interesting docket anyway and I want to work in NYC after, so the improvement would be worth it?
