US Bankruptcy Court Clerkships

Post by InfamousJBI » Sat Nov 23, 2019 10:13 pm

Hi Everyone,

I’m currently a 2L at a regional school in NY and am interested in clerking after graduation. I’ll be interning with the NJ AG in the Tax & Bankruptcy division and I’m considering using those connections to get an internship at the US Bankruptcy Court, any of DNJ, EDNY, or SDNY. Many people from my school are able to go from interning to clerking very smoothly.

My real question is what the perception of a US Bankruptcy Court clerkship is as compared to a District Court? Are they viewed as specialized District Courts? Also, would it be feasible to then try and secure a clerkship at a circuit court?

Thanks guys!

All I can offer is anecdotal evidence, but I know the New York office of my firm values bankruptcy clerkships. I think doing one would be a real asset to you if you want to do bankruptcy work someday, and otherwise it could be useful in litigation for large, complex cases. I don't have any advice on the feasibility on securing a circuit court clerkship afterward though, unfortunately.
