Las Vegas and Miami 1L SA

Post by 1515 » Tue Dec 25, 2018 9:58 pm

Hey,

1L here looking to snag a 1L SA. I am working on my materials for NY, but wanted to inquire to see if anyone did a 1L SA in either Miami or Las Vegas, without being from either place, and could provide some info about the process for that, including how they hunted down potential firms and what the work was like (e.g. are there firms in Vegas that specialize in work for casinos?).

Also, a side question, what are some good ways to research which law firms a company retains?

Thanks, have a grand Winter Break everyone.

I'm a 1L as well so take this with a a grain of salt, but I don't think a Miami 1L SA is in the cards for you if you're not from here. I believe there are only 4 official 1L positions in town atm (in each at Akerman, Jones Day, White & Case, and Bilzin Sumberg) and many T14 people with ties interviewing for them--including HYS students with strong ties. I doubt impeccable credentials without ties would snag one of the spots since the firms here are very serious about only hiring people committed to practicing here; and besides LatAm work, for which you must be fluent in spanish, there's no real professional reason to be here (at least that I can think of) as opposed to the major markets. All that being said, if I were you I'd apply to all the major markets you may be interested in before applying to Miami

Thanks for the info, sounds like I should focus on NY and the secondary market that I am from.

Good luck if you're applying for the 1L SAs in Miami, sounds like they're real tough to get.

Aren't there a high concentration of excellent plaintiff firms?

I know Podhurst Orseck is top notch, and Kenny Nachwalter as well as Colson Hicks are supposed to be very good too; but that doesn't seem like a reason to come here specifically since major markets also have excellent plaintiff firms. There's also alot of real estate work in Miami. But all the reasons for coming here besides LatAm work seem unpersuasive, since all other practices are available in major markets. Again, I'm only a 1L though.

Pretty sure it’s blackbox. Did you mean for the summer program?

No, I meant for a junior associate. I assume they don't hire many right out of law school but was just wondering in case they did.
