Varies widly by school, but my journal gives out strikes for each 24 hours past a missed deadline, with 2 strikes maximum per assignment. 3rd strike is booted off the journal. I think the journal is just removed from your transcript altogether, but you might get a Fail (journals are all pass/fail I believe).

If we're talking about 1 month after the due date, you need to sit with your EIC/ME and talk to them about a possible solution. They're the ones who hold your fate in their hands. The professor is fine with a late submission because they're not in charge of or responsible for the journal and therefore don't care.
