I feel like I'm not doing enough on bar prep but I'm also ahead of Barbri's in class schedule. How do you actually know if you're doing enough?
It took me a pathetically long time to realize what I was doing was not enough (took NY in 2016). I did what Kaplan said (including watch all of the lectures on normal speed) and then got absolutely destroyed by the "midterm." -- Like, I did worse on the midterm than my diagnostic. Spent about 12 hours panicking/reevaluating my life and figured fuck it, I'll forego lectures and focus on what I thought/hoped worked: maximum amount of practice MBE questions.

Ended up making/reading/annotating outlines for the subjects (in lieu of autopiloting through lectures) that were on the exam, and then just doing as many MBE questions for each section as I could until I was averaging 75%+ corrects for each subject.

I was pretty unsure about what to do for essays, so I read the TLS guide to bullshitting bar essays thread (mandatory reading imo), and then just read lots and lots of model answers (some of which were inherently wrong about parts of the law, wp Kaplan  ) and reminded myself to follow the right essay structure, even if I can't recall the right rule.

Essay day for the bar was the most demoralizing experience of my life (not counting artificially emotional stuff like losing in hockey, etc). I was 99% sure I failed (and for some essays, I wrote a max of like 200 words, essentially just a skeleton of the structure with some rules I invented). I thought I knew secured transactions, for example, and then on the MEE we got some absurdly confusing fact pattern with a cancer fighting technology affixed to a building. I filled in IRAC with some bullshit secured-transaction-ey sounding words and moved on.

I decided to follow through on showing up for the next day of the exam (had a steak dinner with my mom the night of the essays and ate like two bites and just sat there dumbfounded, according to her -- no real recollection of this meal).

The MBE questions didn't "feel" like the practice questions I'd done 2000 of for kaplan, but I just put all my trust in the practice i'd done and took it one question at a time. It was def stressful and a lot of questions i felt like i had down to two options, but that's kind of the nature of this test.

I got out of the MBE a few minutes early and didn't have any of my shit on me besides what I needed to take the test, so I asked some guy to borrow his phone for a sec. He hem'd and haw'd for a while and was like look make it quick. I was like dam. He was like I just flew in from Dubai to take this thing and my phone calls cost like $40/second. I called my ride and then talked to that guy for a while and he was like yeah there's a lot of us foreigners taking the NY bar. For some reason it never dawned on me that my "competition" wasn't just all the tryhards from good schools (I went to a TTT), it was also all kinds of other people. Then I remembered during the MPT, my neighbor never opened her second booklet. I also remembered going to the bathroom and seeing someone writhing on the floor crying. What's the cutoff for autopass due to MBE performance again?

Anyways the next few months were brutal bc I was already making arrangements to take the bar again, assuming I failed. Everyone would not shut the fuck up about it either. I turned on my poker player brain and turned into a cold calculating killer. I forgot what day we get results, and forced myself not to think about the bar at all. Then one random November morning, I wake up to 5 new texts from random classmates saying "CONGRATS YOU DID IT" and I was like o shit, better call mom, she started crying, and I was finally able to breathe. We went to a nice restaurant and I enjoyed my meal. Then random hoops to jump thru to get admitted in NY (e.g. 50 hour pro bono requirement that ate up my winter vacation during my tax LLM), but finally --> attorney.

Anyways i'm off on a tangent but the reason I'm posting is to encourage you to evaluate your method. You should definitely trust the process prescribed by your bar class, but don't blindly assume you're learning, especially if you feel like you're not, or if you encounter evidence that you're not (my evidence was my 48% correct answer rate on the kaplan MBE midterm). If lectures don't work for you, find a better use of your time.

Also, a plug for the iphone MBE flash cards app. It's expensive af but probably got me the couple of points that meant a passing score.

Good luck, C/O 2018!

Same here. I feel like I'm doing ok, but the daily work does not always require 8+ hours. Not sure if I am doing this right. Any thoughts?

Also, I think I am going to add in more MBE practice to supplement Barbri (maybe Adapitbar). I feel like I'm learning the rules well, but it's very abstract without context.

Unchill question: how are Themis reviewers doing on PQs?
Has anyone gotten their graded essay back yet?
I got my graded essay back, my grader was not impressed
Just got my graded essay back. I'm guessing the talent pool for DC is more skilled than GA, Hand. My grader loved my steaming-pile of scatter-shot words. At least compared to the GA average.

Just do nothing so that you can have reassurance that you're not doing enough.
Genuine LOL, Kodo.

I am intimately familiar with the "discard" and "mark as complete" buttons.

Thanks DOT for sharing that! I already feel like I’m worrying because I keep skipping minor things for other obligations but I guess I’m most worried about the essays.

Also am I missing something, but what are we supposed to do on the weekends? Kaplan doesn’t have anything in the syllabus, do we just review the outlines or something?

Themis has us powering right through the weekends; I don't think so, Themis

I'm definitely worried about the essays. For now just doing them open book instead of trying to make up the law, but will move on to practicing full-blown BSing at some point I guess

Is anyone taking Barbri?

I don't understand how the knowledge checks work and what is required to skip AMPs. I feel like I'm doing average in the knowledge check and its telling me I tested out of all but 1 AMP in both subjects I've done so far. Also, if anyone can explain why Barbri gives you separate big outlines for the MBE and MEE, I'd love to know. Is there some substantive difference?

+1 on open-book essays.
I'll give it a good run, but when I've typed all of the rule statements I "know" and 30 minutes remain on the clock, I start flipping through the outline.

MBEs are easymode. Trying to memorize these rule statements for the essay portion might just kill me.

It's also pretty stupid themis makes you do all the graded essays on Friday and Saturday. I mean why?

There is no reason to be working through the weekends and even less reason to be doing it before July. That’s a fast road to burnout well in advance of the bar.

My strat is to just focus on mbe for now and get it nailed down, and then cram essay shit in the 2-3 weeks leading up to the exam.

Bold strat. I like it, but I'd be a wreck trying to pull it off.

I start in 2 weeks

Haven't thought about the bar much b/c I'm pretty sure I failed the MBE and I'm just resigned to my fate.
