I guess I'll be the one to make this.

Hi, everyone!

I promise to make the OP as fancy as the Yale thread eventually. hmu with questions about Chicago as long as those questions are limited to the three neighborhoods I spend all my time in

Hey! Thanks for making this. I can also answer questions about Chicago as long as they're related to the 1 neighborhood I spend all my time in.

What are people leaning towards in terms of living situation? I want to be in/near Streeterville for 1L year but I also have a car. I might try to get a roommate and split a 2x2 so I can afford the $200+ a month for parking.

I was planning on getting a 1 BR with my SO around streeterville and not having a car. We are moving from DC and don't have a car here. Any Chicago peeps care to chime in on the feasibility of not having a car?

Absolutely feasible. Went all 3 years of law school without a car. Will be car-free for at least another 1-2 years of lawyering in the city. And I'm a person who enjoys driving and has driven probably 300,000+ miles in my life.

Awesome, that's what I figured but I've only been to Chicago twice. I'll be coming in for ASW though!

ASW was my first time in Chicago (other than as an infant one time I didn't remember). Loved it enough to completely change my plans around for job and everything. Currently clerking, but can't wait to get back in a few months.

Excited for ASW! I hope I like Chicago, because I just ran my COA numbers between my offers and the difference between NU and the others is just insane! (thank you Pritzker ;)) Hope to see some of you there!

Also, if anyone has good suggestions for nice neighborhoods, but cheaper-side housing not too far from the school, please let me know! I need somewhere to start looking, because I know 0 about Chicago.

I agree. A car is usually not needed for living in Chicago. The trains are pretty good, and you can always uber. Also, Chicago sold the right to collect parking tickets to a private company and they are brutal. That said, you may want a car if you have to drive out to the suburbs or other cities frequently.

I really wish I could be at ASW but then again I would probably just turtle the entire time. Hopefully I am forced to make friends during orientation.

Upon further review I'm leaning towards a 1BR in Lake View within walking distance of the Red Line so keeping my car with me will be a bit more feasible (I want to be able to visit friends in Milwaukee/Detroit, plus I might do a ski trip or two over winter break). According to their housing survey that is the 2nd most popular neighborhood after the Streeterville area so there should be other students around. Though it will be painful to live that close to Wrigley as a Sox fan...

Edit: Now I'm looking at stuff on the south side (~Bridgeport/Armour Square) and it is cheaper, still near the Red Line with a ~40min commute to campus and within walking distance of Unfortunately Named Field...hmm.

Make sure to check bus routes too when you guys are looking at housing. The red line is nice but there are some buses that go right by the school. For studying reasons I also prefer a 40 min bus ride to 20 min on the train (since it’s a 10 minute walk to the red for me).

See you all at ASW!

If we submitted the scholarship acceptance form, do we also have to submit the candidate response form? I assume one is enough...
