Eh, it's not even Jan 1st. There's still plenty of other fish in the sea
BIG FACTS

i'm just now submitting apps. I've been doing cover letters, PS's and stuff all at the same time so now is when i'm just mass applying after doing all of that stuff

low key sad one of the firm's i REALLY like closed their app it seems... I think they may have filled the positions already which sucks bc i reallllly like them but oh well. may email recruitment to find out if the app is just not showing up or what, not sure
Damn, that's a bummer. Can't hurt to email HR and see if they're still accepting apps. You focusing on 1L SA's?

The whole job application process is much more stressful than I had anticipated.

So many cover letters to write, so little time!

It gets easier once you get rolling. Interview prep for your first couple can be alot of work though

Yeah, I've applied for like 2 jobs at this point (finals didn't end until the 21st and I was a little swamped before then) and I'm going to be out of the country for the next two weeks so I probably won't be applying for many more before I get back. Hopefully all the jobs won't be taken by the time I get home. I wasn't that worried about it, but now you've all got me nervous. I'm also not applying for 1L SA's though, I understand those are much more competitive than unpaid 1L summer public interest jobs

Yeah I have only applied to 1 job but I am public interest oriented -- so I guess I'll have to fire up apps after the New Year.

Is there a law review/write-on guide out there somewhere? I want to know what I'm getting myself into while I have free time.

I've been out of the country since the day of my last final and I still won't be back for another week. Haven't actually touched any application material because I've been in a holiday mode. But I opened my email today and started being productive so plan is to bang some stuff out tomorrow and hopefully have a decent number of apps out before my flight next week.

Good luck y'all!!

Also this wait for grades fucking sucks.

+1 to this. Worse than waiting for the LSAT, since there's no retaking

It's gonna be alright. Nearly all of us are going to good schools and will find real lawyer jobs in all but the worst cases. A lot of y'all are at *great* schools and will more likely than not have the option of biglaw even from median.

Sneaking in to say: don't worry about this now; it's not worth worrying about or preparing for. BUT, since you probably will worry: different schools do slightly different kinds of write-ons, but commonly you get a universe of legal stuff (cases/articles/statutes etc.) to write an essay (mini-law review note) about, and a bluebook test. You get some period of time ranging from a weekend to a month (not very common) to churn it out. At some schools it'll be mostly grades driven and you just need to make a good faith effort; at others, you can write on purely by your writing so the essay matters a lot. Advice: FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. If you can only do one, writing impeccably cleanly and clearly is better than producing brilliant ideas. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. If you're asked to pick a side on something (when I graded write-ons, the topic was the death penalty), make sure to address counterarguments. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.

Basically write-on submissions fall into one of three categories: brilliant auto-accept (small category); oh dear god no (small category), and a mushy middle where all the essays look pretty much the same (huge category). If you fall in the middle, your graders are looking for reasons to mark you down to weed out however many have to be weeded out, and so something completely clean but not earth-shattering tends to win over interesting but messy.

Lol it's more of an ego thing. I've never been particularly funny or attractive, so I naturally place an unreasonable amount of self-worth on my intellect.

So true it hurts. Plus some 1L summer jobs might depend on good grades.

+1, and this is probably true of all legal writing, especially in law school. bluebook is an easy way to sort ppl, so are typos and grammar mistakes bc substantively you're not going to dazzle the reader with your insights or analysis. the instructions (like formatting) + bluebook + grammar is like 80% of the battle.

Don't worry platopus I've got no doubt that you did very well! Grades will be here before we know it and by then 2nd semester will have commenced so you can take the 1L class by storm yet again.

Got an email today that they hope to make our grades available in one week. Seems reasonable.

i'm weirdly not worried at all about grades. getting mine in a few days and at the moment I am straight chilling (and admittedly shooting my shot with some summer positions that are prob out of my league) without shitty grades

Did anyone take Property first semester and buy a supplement for it? I've got Dressler's Crim supplement and the Glannon Civ Pro E&E, and I'd be interested in trading one of them for something for Property.

I have the Property E&E - you can just have it if you can pay for shipping. I'm still out of the country and can't get to my locker until this Friday if you want it and don't mind waiting!

That would be lovely, and I don't mind waiting, since it's really more for the end of the semester. PM me how you'd like me to send money for shipping, and I'll get it to you with an address.

And I'll make the Glannon and Dressler supplements available on the same terms if anyone needs them.
