Re: Budgeting PSA for 2L SAs

Hopefully this is intuitive, but just in case it's not: In about two months, you're going to be making a lot of money to do very little. No matter what you have planned for your summer earnings (models and bottles, pre-3L trip, law school tuition, etc.), try to save up money to cover your bar study...

Definitely don't do it before the end of the semester. A few days before you start is probably fine. Not sooner.

Re: Baker McKenzie?

Wow. I can't speak to Baker McKenzie specifically, but I know I do a ton of business development at my firm. Probably 200-300 hours a year depending on what you consider business development--I was going to stuff like CLE lunches and dinners at least once or twice a week to go out and meet people, ...

That's not me saying I don't want to make partner. I do. I guess I just don't quite understand what partner gunning wou...

Baker McKenzie?

https://abovethelaw.com/2018/03/facing-mounting-pressure-over-shortchanging-attorneys-baker-mckenzie-doubles-down-and-blames-associates/ Baker McKenzie, according to ATL's source, told associates they need to do between 300 and 400 hours of business development work to be bonus eligible. 1. Is this ...

Coming in to add: in some places, getting a long term Airbnb will likely be cheaper than a short term lease. That is certainly the case at least in Houston or Dallas.

Re: Business formal

I agree with the above. Before school, get 2 suits, 3-4 blouses/shells, and a good pair of heels. Maybe 1 suit only if you fluctuate in weight during stressful situations. Before you start work, get a vibe of your office dress code. But if business formal, you’ll likely want 2-3 more suits, 2-3 more...

Re: Is it appropriate to talk about financials in Why X's?

I don't think I would discuss this. For one thing, you haven't been offered a scholarship yet, so it seems a little assuming. Try to find genuine, substantive reasons to discuss instead. I don't think you should be mentioning other schools, at all. Seems like if your gf/bf asked you why you liked th...

A guy at my center approached this girl in the parking lot and asked "do you need anything to take the LSAT"; managed to print his ticket and get in, later told the same girl he was a football player for OU and they just needed him to get a score before they admitted him...he left halfway through a...

Re: Does knowing a foreign language help in the hiring process?

I think the judge you're talking about would be a very rare exception. For most jobs, the answer will be no, it will not help you. Now there are some jobs where a foreign language is a must. Want to be an immigration attorney in Texas? Probably need to know Spanish. But I can't think of any job wher...

Re: Univ of Texas School of Law students / grads taking questions

Do any of y'all 2/3Ls or grads have any must take classes (or must avoid ones)? "Must take" really has three facets to it. There are classes that are easy As. There are classes that are interesting/the professor is awesome. And then there are classes that are actually helpful. Easy As: Any writing ...

Re: UT vs. Georgetown

It really is about the money. It seems like you're looking at 100K less in loans if you pick UT over Georgetown. So ask yourself: how important is ending up in DC to you? Is it 100K important? Try to quantify it. It seems silly, but ask yourself: if someone walked into your office/apartment with 100...

Re: Accepted SA for 2L Summer but I Want to be in different city

My response depends on what the life stuff is. If it's you started dating a new person and want to be in their city, I wouldn't broach the subject. If it's more along the lines of an immediate family member (mother/father/sibling/spouse) has a terminal illness and you need to be closer to them, I'd ...

Re: UT vs. Georgetown

Biding my time waiting on other schools with a little pondering over the only 2 where I'm already in. I applied to UT and Georgetown because I thought they were my best semi-safe options, plus I love (and have lived in) both Austin and DC. However, now that I'm in at both, I'm struggling to think o...
