Re: best law schools in Australia

my friend's wife went to ANU, and it's an undergrad degree, not grad school. They have a graduate law school as well! It looks like Australia is a country that will let you practice if you have a Bachelor's in law (LLB), but you can get a JD if you had a non-law undergrad background and then LLM pr...

I don't think anyone on here is qualified to talk about the best law schools in Australia, but a quick Google search led me to: https://www.admitkard.com/blog/2017/12/13/top-colleges-for-studying-law-in-australia/ https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings-articles/university-subject-rankin...

Re: Law Clerk at Two Jobs at Once?

That's fine if you want to try to do both jobs at once, but you ABSOLUTELY need to disclose it to both employers.

Re: Travel expenses

I'd honestly just ask whoever your contact in recruiting is, if no LSLers weigh in with their experiences. I'd just shoot them an email saying, "Hi X, I have a quick question. Do lateral candidates typically get reimbursed for taxis and meals when traveling to and from the callback?"

Re: what should I be asking before I sign an offer

A few other things that could be of interest are (a) how many people in their entering class are still at the firm, (b) whether there's an hours requirement to hit a bonus, and (c) whether people typically hit their bonuses.

You're fine either way, don't overthink it. I'd either use the firm's website one or the one listed on NALP (but not one you obtained through a Google search).

Re: Advice on what to include in massmail followup?

your gpa should be on your resume anyway, so there's no real reason to withhold the transcript. Unless you're at a school that doesn't calculate GPAs and tells you not to self-calculate and put it on your resume (but I don't think lionboy is at NYU and I'm not sure if other schools have that policy).

Re: Advice on what to include in massmail followup?

If they're explicitly asking for a transcript and writing sample, then I unfortunately do think you should attach it again here. Firms that are still searching for people to fill their last SA class spots might be willing to overlook mediocre grades anyway (or at least hopefully). But also happy to ...

Re: Advice on what to include in massmail followup?

I think that's fine, I'd just reattach the materials that the firm requested in the first place (cover letter, writing sample, etc.). And seriously, emailing recruiting directors is not a big deal! Make sure you don't have any typos in your emails to them, but they're just people - and not people th...

Re: Advice on what to include in massmail followup?

I think you'd be fine reaching out to the recruiting director if that's the only contact they list. I'd probably do resume and transcript again to be safe - is there anything substantive at all you can add to your resume though? If yes, you can mention that it's an updated resume. I think you can sa...

Re: Mass Mailing "Now" vs Mass Mailing after OCI

Send them now, you don't want to risk their summer classes filling up while you wait. And if you're mass mailing a firm that is coming to your school's OCI and you just couldn't get an interview through the lottery (if you're at a school that does a lottery system), there is a chance they might be w...

Hmm, I would save it for the interview context and not mention it in your cover letter, but I don't feel strongly about this.

Re: Show not tell Question

I would not include a concluding sentence. You don't need it to get your point across. If the previous description doesn't already scream "HEY I HAVE ATTENTION TO DETAIL" then you should rewrite that portion rather than adding the concluding sentence. As far as adding words like "carefully," those ...

Re: Should you always send a cover letter even if it is not asked for?

That's a current student giving advice to another current student again. Just because a rising 2L writes something on Reddit doesn't mean they're qualified to give advice. Adding a well-written cover letter when the employer only ask for a resume and transcript, as long as they don't explicitly say ...

Re: Do you trust Chambers Insider Guide for Firm Research?

How else do you research a firm, especially for interviews? It's been a while, but I relied on - every bit of available website info (Chambers, NALP, Above the Law, you name it) I could find, including the gossip - alumni contacts there (sometimes also a good opportunity to grab networking coffee) ...

Re: Should you always send a cover letter even if it is not asked for?

I disagree. I think unless it is a portal where you can upload an optional cover letter you should not upload a cover letter in an email if they do not ask for it. It becomes like you can't follow instructions. If it is a portal -- i agree you should upload it even if it is optional I am sorry for ...

I think you can say, "I really enjoyed my time at V100, but I'm interested in gaining experience in a larger firm as well." And then seriously consider splitting your summer. I know my firm at least allows former 1L SAs to come back for 2 weeks at the end of their summers elsewhere, just so you can ...

Re: Thoughts on expressing a specific niche interest?

This can sometimes end up hurting you - there are some firms out there that hire people into specific groups, and they just won't give you an offer if they don't think they can place you into that group. I found that out the hard way during OCI back in the day when I got a call from a firm in late O...

See my reply below; I would caution a bit before applying but would defer to anyone that knows more than I do because I am a student too I would caution you against trying to give advice on this topic as a rising 2L. No need to post in this thread about thinking it's "pestering" or "childish" when ...

Re: Should you always send a cover letter even if it is not asked for?

You don't always need to send one, but it is almost always a good idea. If you have a very strong resume and transcript (such as top grades from a T6), then you'd honestly still be fine without sending a cover letter. You could even include a short letter in the email in lieu of a cover letter, if ...
