Re: 2019 Bonus Discussion
Milbank is out so far: https://abovethelaw.com/2019/11/breaking-biglaw-bonuses-are-here/ Edit: Same as last year. Cravath needs to step in and set a new Cravath scale for this year! I like how celebratory the tone is of the ATL article when this is clearly tragic news. Anyway this firm is obviously...

Re: Billable Hours Q
I usually lose 2 hours for every 8 billed (so "working" or in the office for 10), depending on my efficiency that day. OP, to translate what a regular full time non legal salaried job is like into billable hours, that's like ~30 billable hours a week. No one works non-stop during the workday. I’m p...

Re: 2019 Summer Bonus Discussion
I have a friend who works at Paul, Weiss who claims to have overheard one partner talking to another (before a meeting with Nintendo in-house) complaining that the upcoming summer bonus is "excessive." Bless you. Let's keep talking about it until we make it happen. (Gets it) I don’t think it’s happ...

Re: Senior Associate
I’m fairly confident that “Senior Associate” is just a signal to opposing counsel that “This guy is a pain in the ass to work across from and all around general piece of work.”
Hope that helps!

Re: UT Austin c/o 2022
UT grad and practicing ESTEEMED BIG TEXAS LAWYER here, also happy to answer any questions if that’s helpful. I think all else equal you should take a T14 over UT if you want Texas big law. Even hot garbage schools like Georgetown are going to give you a better shot. But I truly mean all else is equa...

Re: UT Austin v NU Big Law
UT is a good school and I’m proud I went there and with the benefit of hindsight it was the best decision for me and all that good stuff but whatever. I think there’s many scenarios where it should be chosen over a T14 but what the OP is describing ain’t one of them.

Re: UT Austin v NU Big Law
My firm is admittedly on the bigger side of big law but cutoffs are much more favorable for T14 schools than for UT. If you’re from Northwestern you could be an average student and get an offer. If you’re an average UT student you probably wouldn’t get an interview and good luck getting an offer. Wh...

Re: UT Austin v NU Big Law
I don’t know what “the South” is or if Texas is even a part of it but in a vacuum it’s almost certainly going to be easier to get a big law job at Northwestern. That includes in Texas. But the question is way too vague to really give a helpful answer here. Can you clarify what sorts of information y...

Seems like school administration would get you closer to DAT CHILL AF low 6 figs/high 5 figs you’re hoping for than law would. I’d just rid that out till you retire. Just focus on the family and cash checks, nothing wrong with that at all. Sounds pretty sweet to me, honestly.

By “respected in the market” surely you don’t mean by opposing counsel, do you? Haha!
On balance in balance it’s a personal decision. Some people wouldn’t do it depending on other options but then again those people wouldn’t fault you if you did I guess (again depending on other options).

The small city Jones Day offices got bumped up to 180k today. So like Cleveland, Columbus, etc. Tbh that’s the only reason to work at jones Day. They got those podunk offices where you can make $$$$ where did you hear this? Cleveland is still at 170, not 180 Isn’t 170 a ton for Cleveland? Oh yeah, ...

I was 100% serious. Your tell was the list of dream places. Maybe (just maybe) some of us here are speaking from experience and taking some time out of our day to try and help people avoid making the same mistakes we have seen or lived.
Whatever though, enjoy Columbia.

Re: US Big Law -> Expat/Overseas Gig?
Sounds like you want to wear a suit, STACK FAT STACKS OF FAT CASH $$$$$$$$, and live dat best ex-pat life.
I think you might want to go back to the drawing board and re-evaluate your motivations and what you want out of life. I'm not sure the current plan is going to get you where you want to go.

Re: Are firm receptions worthwhile?
Yeah the starting out with "Definitely don't bring a briefcase" and then transitioning to "But def bring your business cards" made me think maybe it was a joke for a second but sadly no. Law students: Go if you can, talk to people, learn something about the firm, enjoy some free food and drink, try ...

Re: Are firm receptions worthwhile?
I thought about someone bringing a backpack to one of these things and was like hell naw but then I thought about someone bringing a briefcase and that was even worse so I ultimately landed on definitely do not bring any materials. By all means send someone your resume afterwards if need be.
