In house career goals
Hey folks, I am working on some medium term (one to two year) goals with my boss (our GC). I'm approx eight years in (a few years in house after several years in firms) with a goal of one day being a GC. What are some general goals for professional development to think about? Not really thinking of ...

Re: Deal bonus for IPO counsel
Indeed not top brass, but VP level. And our cap is and will be far, far larger than the 300m assumption. Very helpful. Thanks for the insight.

Re: Deal bonus for IPO counsel
I do exec comp work. A transaction bonus would be standard for key employees. Of course, who the top brass views as key varies greatly. It's also really hard to give too much insight into the bonus size, because it can depend on the industry, size of the company, and, of course, internal politics, ...

Re: Deal bonus for IPO counsel
So you're saying indeed a deal bonus is standard, it's just the size varies. I assume it varies both on the cash and equity side. would love to see some data points if people have them.

Deal bonus for IPO counsel
It's been a minute. Apologies for my absense the last couple of years. I've moved, started a family, etc etc. Life got busy. Life may be getting busier. Does anyone know what common practice is for in house counsel as it relates to deal bonuses, specifically around taking a company to and through an...

Re: Smokey’s Guide to Biglaw Summer Associate
How do you handle being assigned a lot of work from different attorneys during your 1L SA? I have a friend who said he worked 10.5 hours by her second day. For anyone who's had both a 1L and 2L summer in biglaw, are there any differences between the 2/how the SA is treated/work load? This will be s...

Re: Los Angeles Market Associate Taking Questions -- OCI and BID LIST HELP
how hard is to lateral from SF/PA to LA doing EC/VC work? thanks! Shouldnt be hard so long as you have a couple to a few years of experience, are currently doing EC/VC work now, and you're at one of the good firms. I know Gunderson, Latham, WSGR, Goodwin, and Kirkland are all currently looking for ...

Re: Big Law Hours Check
This thread feels like an unhealthy dick swinging contest. Yeah. I think there is some utility in this--if you are fucking slammed knowing that other people out there are also getting double fisted. But there is so much hours lumpiness intra-group/intra-firm that doing intra-market or intra-discipl...

Re: Los Angeles Market Associate Taking Questions -- OCI and BID LIST HELP
Hey Smokey (and anyone else who sees this and can advise), I am a 1L at a CCN looking into trying to snag a 1L SA. Top choice is LA (which is also where I wish to end up after law school). Any advice in terms of which firms to target, whether I need to send things out at 00:01am on Dec 1st, etc? Th...

Re: Does Biglaw Get Better for Corporate Associates?
No matter where you are, your hours are going to be unpredictable--that's just the nature of biglaw and corporate especially. Aside form that, it reads like your firm or office has bad culture. Certain corporate departments can be like this, but it's not the norm or should be expected. You should be...

Re: Los Angeles Market Associate Taking Questions
This actually sounds great.....WAY different than what others have said about K&E (including the LA office), but the facetime requirement (or lack thereof) is actually quite surprising. I'm looking into corporate as my main interest, and if you would be willing to talk to me separately via PM (sinc...

Re: Los Angeles Market Associate Taking Questions
How would you rank the QoL and work (in terms of interest) from the following firms (LA/CC corporate)? Latham, Skadden, Milbank, Kirkland, OMM, S&C, GDC Not sure what you mean by "work (in terms of interest)" From what I know: Latham: I have heard that facetime is generally pretty low. There are th...

Re: Los Angeles Market Associate Taking Questions -- OCI and BID LIST HELP
Heard rumblings of OMM financial struggles and this on top of those rumblings doesn't project the greatest image. Any real concern in going there? I've been hearing about financial issues at OMM for several years now, first from senior associates who had laterealled from there to my old firm. Not s...

Re: Is it possible to start in a new practice group at another firm?
Yeah it happens a decent amount. How have you seen it happen? Need advice. Thanks! Probably by (1) having excellent academics and (2) coming from a top pier firm or a top firm to a *lesser* firm. This is correct. This has basically been the experience of the several people I know who did it. Most o...

Also, just wanted to flag that the word 'unique' shouldn't/can't be modified. Hi Smokey, Normally I refrain from snark, but this seems like an ample opportunity to use some. Your claim is true for the first definition of unique, meaning "being the only one of its kind." But I was using unique in it...

Re: Consumer Class Actoin v. Securities
This type of class action is literally a public service. Let’s be careful here with the use of the word “literally.” You are not literally doing a public service. If you were literally doing a public service, you wouldn’t be taking 40% of what the the slice of the public you’re helping was awarded,...

"Hiring Partner" my ass . . . It's not going to preclude you from lateraling up. Many of the moving parts of a million dollar deal are the same as a billion dollar deal, there's just more parts (e.g. you're more likely to be dealing with public companies in the larger deals, which have more formalit...

There was a vigorous debate about this on the old board with equally good points on each side. I used to be of the opinion they should be sent, but now I think don’t send them.
