Re: CS career megathread / AMA
I don’t know computers but an entry level job in any industry earning 120-140k in a low cost of living area is not going to be easy to find. But something at that level when you are 4-5 years in will be much easier to find (still not easy though).

Re: Hi. New here. Thinking of becoming a lawyer.
You need to identify like a half dozen places in Birmingham or nearby where you could realistically work after graduating and ideally talk to people in those jobs to see if it’s something you want to do. Honestly I think it’s a bad idea, if you want to help people more there have to be ways to do it...

Re: Asking for old job back after lateral move
i agree that theres no point waiting a year or any longer if you want to go back but 2 months is just long enough for there to be a very good chance they realized its a huge relief to not have to pay an associate when there is not enough work to go around in the first place.

My friend did it with no issue but his CO was very supportive and he had been in the reserves for several years before LS. I would absolutely not join just as a soft for law school admissions though.

Re: "Going Solo" Immediately After Law School?
i understand wanting to solo straight out, but even working for a crappy attorney or small firm for a year would be immensely valuable before going solo. there are a lot of little things you can learn during that time like pricing, basic marketing, local rules & court quirks (dumb stuff like where t...

Plenty of people get married and have kids in law school - it’s a lot but I’m not sure it’s any “worse” than doing so when you are working as an attorney later on (in many ways I think it’s easier but that’s just me). You don’t have to freeze everything else going on in your personal life to do law ...

Re: TTT--Is my life over?
I mean, there are a million other kinds of jobs besides math, coding, working with kids, politics, and law. Seriously and most of them don’t require 3 years and six figures of debt to get I don’t think law school is even a terrible option but be real about wanting a career path with more prestige a...

Yeah that one is great too. He has a long running suit against Best Buy for a bait and switch I think he also protested outside of it for a few days. In his civil rights cases based on his own criminal issues he cited several Iron Maiden song lyrics and album art in his briefing. The guy is maybe no...

idk like if your lease is up and you need a car, and you really want the AMG model and can swing the added cost, but due to allocation/supply issues you can’t get one for maybe another year so you settle for the still very nice, less exciting model, I can see being a little bummed knowing that you ...

Re: Talking politics at work: guidelines? Guidance?
The bigger issue is feeling like you have nothing interesting to talk about other than politics. Idk if you’re giving yourself enough credit but there have to be some other things, even seemingly dull things, to talk about at work other than politics. Like I’ve always been the go to guy at work to t...

Re: Is clerking a scam?
I agree that I hear way more horror stories than positive stories from classmates. I think a third of my friends who clerked left early or moved to a different judge, but these are all state clerkships and not federal so idk if that’s what people talk about when they promote clerking.

Re: Does a SCOTUS Clerkship Matter?
I think the better way to look at it would be focusing on the definite advantages (dollar amount of clerkship bonus and whatever intrinsic value working this job would have to you) vs what you think you’ll lose or miss out on personally by staying in DC another year. I don’t think we can answer that...

Re: Does a SCOTUS Clerkship Matter?
What would you do if you didn’t do (or try for) SCOTUS after the clerkship? If the plan is to do big law for a couple years anyhow it seems better to try for the clerkship and get that big bonus/even better experience for any firm in any part of the country. Other than the extra time in DC or commut...

Re: Cancelling an accepted offer
I know this would burn a bridge at the firm but does it really harm you with other firms? I work in a small market and have never heard of firms communicating this info or blackballing people that way. Definitely agree it’s dumb to renege if it’s just a perceived prestige thing but if it’s a major s...

Re: Law Clerk at Two Jobs at Once?
if you are at a 2L at a T14 with a presumably big law SA lined up I have no idea why you are doing this why have potential conflicts from 2 small time law clerk jobs that could even remotely jeopardize your anticipated SA and post grad employment. The obligation to disclose doesn’t come from policie...

Re: Law Clerk at Two Jobs at Once?
Even if there are no ethical issues there’s a chance one or both firms have malpractice policies that prevent covered persons from moonlighting without clearing it with the firm and using the firms standard engagement letter/conflicts process. Money doesn’t make something OK or not but an extra 100-...

If you need money get an extra job at school not at another firm or just quit once you find a firm that will give you more hours/money.
I’m sure you could get away with it but it’s not right and you know better as a law student.

Came in at 9, left exactly at 5, took long lunches most days. I didn’t have much to do but helped with whatever someone asked me to do, which was a lot of housekeeping and organization stuff. It was a weird couple of days because people mostly didn’t take it well. Not coming in at all or working ver...

Did they give you a salary? I am pretty sure it was not an offer but we need more details. I don’t think most employers care about seeing an updated resume after they hire you but some would want an updated transcript.

Re: Thoughts on expressing a specific niche interest?
Also need a very good answer as to why. This is the biggest issue I had even with niche groups I was genuinely interested in. And it can easily backfire - I am confident I talked myself out of possible offers by going on about how interested I was in a given specialty only to have someone say “well...

It’s normal as a law student to attach a ton of importance to every job related thing you do and overthink it, since it is extremely important to you to get a job. But you can’t let it keep you from applying like crazy and following up on jobs you really want.
