Re: CS career megathread / AMA

I'll offer a slightly more positive perspective and say that I think you *can* advise on ML/AI-related products as pcounsel. It typically will be yes, you can implement X feature vs. no, you can't implement Y feature. But I do think that for someone with your background, PMs and SWEs would respect y...

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

Even if you don't hit a 4 or 5 bagger with your company, you're still likely generating QQQ returns with your tech company effectively investing all of that money up front for you. And lately that has meant your stock doubles during your RSU grant period.

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

Hi! Kind of a strange question, but I have a quick question about pivoting from a career *in* tech to a career in law school. I was really lucky and able to net roughly 400K+ this year in tech and am having a few second thoughts about whether a legal career is appropriate, primarily because I work ...

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

But I think the point about upward mobility is a good one because the $90k IBM dude can make the jump to $200k in his mid 20s more easily than someone who worked at a small law firm trying to jump to biglaw after a few years. And even if you're not focusing on the Bay Area (biglaw equivalent of NY),...

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

I mean I know full professors who’ve been teaching for 20 years who make less than $120k. (Obviously not coding but just for context.) I guess my perception of the compensation for new SWEs or similar is skewed. You're thinking of the biglaw equivalent for SWE probably. FB and Google are paying 22 ...

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

also getting GE+ is basically impossible unless you've been downlvled. i got 2 in a row bc initially downlvled coming from a not-great background, but if I joined FB now at E5+ I would just aim for MAs Is this for GE+ during your first cycle or are you saying in general at the higher levels for fut...

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

That said, to your other point: If getting the interview isn't an issue for you, then there shouldn't be too much concern about this i'm trying to see if it'd be easier to go to G from fb or or from my current company in future. I was thinking that G and fb basically have a revolving door between ea...

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

If you are already getting G interviews, then I would say the boost probably isn't there since it seems like you're good at LC. But if you're not getting interviews, then I think FB almost guarantees you an interview at G (and at FAANGMULAS/whatever the acronym is now). i mean yeah there is some tr...

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

the gunner culture is what worries me. it's much more than what i've seen in G employees i've interacted with. I think this is a fair sentiment comparing the two in broad strokes (obviously could still find a chill team at FB and a bad team at G depending on managers). I think FB gives you lots of ...

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

I think that G hires more people from FB than from anywhere else and that FB hires more people from G than from anywhere else, so I do think it'll be easier to score an interview at G if you have FB on your resume if that's your goal. But I also don't know how much of that is selection bias because ...

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

Definitely don't want to make it seem like I know what I'm talking about with fb, and suralin is the guy you want answering your questions here. Just throwing ideas out from what I've seen/heard rather than first-hand knowledge, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. Also, banking on multipl...

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

Not at fb and never worked there. Just really interested in fb, have a couple friends there now, and have done way more research on it than is probably healthy. Would love to work there some day. Re: CS career megathread / AMA

Performance summary cycle. It's fb's perf. I was under the impression that the most common path to a quick PIP was the standard meets all rating for the first cycle followed by meets most then meets most + PIP. But I'm not sure what percentage of the company actually gets PIP'd, and blind makes it ...

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

recently onsited at fb. am expecting an offer. but I'm concerned about the poor WLB and PIP stories i've heard. a lot of posts online i see suggest constant chat/discussions in internal workflow tools with FB. 6 month review cycles and constant push for so called 'impact'. i don't think i can take ...

Re: Firms to target for 1L SA?

Texas firms have large 1L SA programs, especially in Houston. Vinson & Elkins, Baker Botts, Fulbright, Bracewell, and Andrews Kurth each hire double digit 1L SAs every year.

Re: Tax Llm without accounting degree?

Hey all, I am thinking about pursuing a tax llm at NYU/Georgetown next year. I am comfortable with working at a Big 4 after graduation, and even prefer that option to big law. I have a generic liberal arts degree though, and I am concerned that Big 4 firms won't want to interview someone without an...

Re: CS career megathread / AMA

what kind/field of startup that was? vc funded, if so which round? New media company that had $12.5 million in seed revenue and was about a year from revenue. Title would have been head of business operations. One of those rare new startups with no tech involved. Nice, how's the company doing today?
