Re: Trial Exhaustion

They’re often that horrible combo of boring and stressful. Like I can actually be bored by a witness I’m examining at the same time that I’m stressed because I’m examining a witness.

Re: Submitting a controversial paper to a writing competition?

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with publishing something on a controversial topic, but if you don’t actually agree with what you’re advocating I definitely wouldn’t submit to a competition that’s going to publish the winner. People do google and they will find stuff like that. If it were actua...

Re: Trial Exhaustion

Yeah, I think these are all absolutely normal reactions to trials. Keep in mind, though, that there is a TON to learn about doing trials, and so they're even more overwhelming at the beginning than they will be as you go along - which is to say, you may find that it gets better, especially wrt anxie...

Re: Biglaw 2L SA to PI

I agree that a clerkship would be a good way to reset and get another year to network/figure things out. If you’re looking at state AG, a state clerkship could be a decent move (at least in my law school market, a decent number of state clerks went to the AG’a office) and it might be easier to get t...

Re: Clerkship Time

It’s going to depend on your school (assuming you’re not Henrybax) - some judges won’t care, especially for some schools, but there is a certain zing to being able to say “I hire the top student from school X.” Being the literal top student is a big achievement at almost any school, and can help esp...

Re: Do you underline the period in Id.?

The (non-boomer) appellate guru in my office underlines rather than italicizes and it baffles me. I don’t think our COA even requires underlining.

Re: Should I drop out?

Adding (because we cross posted): you could just have a crappy class. It happens (one of the years I overlapped with at my school was widely considered terrible). I know LSL makes a lot out of atmosphere/culture doesn’t matter, go for the money/outcomes, but cultures do differ and this might not be ...

Re: Should I drop out?

If you’re a 1L, what are you doing this summer? Is it worth doing that and seeing how practice feels compared to school? (If you’re not a 1L, what did you do last summer and what did you think of it?) I think it’s probably worth trying out the summer if that’s your situation, but I think the sabbati...

Re: Penn vs. Yale/Harvard (PhD/JD)

I would say go to Penn. Icechicken is right, Penn is a powerhouse in early American history, and the hierarchy for history PhD programs doesn't really follow the same kind of rankings as law schools (though I'm sure you know that). I mean, yes, Yale is Yale and would hardly hurt for early American h...

Re: NU ~$$$$ vs UVA ~$$$

NU traditionally has a less KJD crowd which may translate to less traditional partying as people may have more significant others/kids/etc. They also probably live more spread out than would be the case in Charlottesville. But whether people party at an ASW has nothing to do with how alumni treat ea...

Re: How to ask an internship to let you know?

You can just contact the AG's office - whoever you've been dealing with there - to say that you have another offer with a deadline of [whatever] but you're extremely interested in their position and will they be able to give you an answer before your other offer expires. Since the judge has given yo...

Re: Fed magistrate or fed public defender for 2L fall

I recommend the magistrate. Bexause you seem like you want to still keep your options open while still boosting your writing experience. Ask former judicial interns or clerks of the judge about how much writing you’ll do and whether the judge allows you to turn work product into writing samples. Th...

Re: UChicago Ruby vs. Harvard vs. Columbia Hamilton vs. USC Rothman

I mean, if you end up a successful biglaw partner the difference in cost probably doesn’t look like much 20 years down the road. The problem is that you have to get their first and there’s serious survivor bias in that kind of advice. (It’s not like Harvard will put you in some kind of worse positio...

I cannot imagine WHY someone would think that e-mail AND handwritten is necessary. Is this like some trick to track who reads ATL by who starts doing this?

I once visited UF, beautiful campus and Gainesville is close to Tampa/St. Pete. BL firms are plentiful in Fl (without the hassle of billiards) and UF is a top choice. Then of course, coming out of law school with no debt, Priceless. Oh my god don’t give advice on attending a school because you visi...

Re: JD + PhD at another university.

Yeah, I'm afraid I don't have a lot of experience with this, but my understanding is what heythatslife said. Overall, doctorate programs are probably easier to work around, in that most courses are once-a-week seminars and once you hit ABD status lots of people move away from their home campus. I kn...

Re: Clerkship Time

A lot of judges want a sample that hasn’t been edited by anyone else, so I don’t know if you really want people to look at your writing sample. If you’re trying to decide what kind of sample to use, people can help with that without reading the actual piece.

You’re right, but victim advocates support prosecution (generally). They work with the prosecution. They’re part of the dark side.

From business insider, those graduating with the highest paying job, PENN #2, behind Columbia. Duke #6, UVA #10. (In 2016, Penn was #1.) LST can fill you in on other categories. Not sure if UVA continues its practice of SFJ, which dramatically inflates their employment stats. If so, it’s impossible...

Re: Best Schools for Phoenix Market

It’s at least partly because of the shallow pool - biglaw in AZ is very small. There is obviously a big gulf between ASU/U of A and T20/14 wrt to biglaw placement, but most of that latter placement is not going to be in Arizona. I personally think that if your priority is location over biglaw, and y...

Re: Guide for Transferring to Another Law School

You can't be admitted as a transfer to a full time program without having completed the equivalent of 1L year. Some people manage to finish via summer classes after part time 1L, but the scheduling rarely works out (you won't have finished the classes by the time the transfer apps are due). So peopl...

For academia/prestige this is silly. If you are interesting in an academic path, your research training, output and agenda will be much more important than Ivy status/being one rung higher on USNWR.
