Re: NourishAndStrengthen's Guide to Admissions Essays

Some applicants can benefit, mostly if you have C&F issues or are a particularly unconventional applicant (especially severe splitters) and want assistance making your whole application as strong as it can be. Or someone who feels especially ignorant about the process and wants some individual help....

I disagree with a fair amount of the above, mostly the idea that you can get hired as a PhD without a publication record (you can’t, and publication timelines in the humanities are much worse than for legal academia). I also absolutely disagree that people with Princeton degrees aren’t spending thei...

Re: Fired from 2 biglaw jobs in 6 months - please help

Yeah, I can’t give very specific advice, but I did want to say that you’re not a lemon. No one is suited for every job out there and it’s a question of finding something that works for you. You’re obviously extremely intelligent and capable of success, from your academic history - you just may have ...

Re: Clerks Taking Questions

I really think the course thing is extremely idiosyncratic and tough to predict. I don't think judicial externships/appellate standards of review courses are in themselves a plus; the plus in the latter case was taking the course from the SSC chief justice's clerk, not the topic of the course. I thi...

"Operation" probably also depends where the car is - like if it's in the parking lot at the bar or in your driveway, that's different from if it's sitting by the side of the road or at a rest stop.

Re: How would I be judged for my 1L Experience ?

As long as it's what you actually did, it's fine. Don't worry about what other people did or didn't do. Presumably you didn't write something generic like "did substantive work" but wrote the specific duties you had like "wrote memos, analyzed contracts, compiled data" (for whatever it is that you d...

Re: How would I be judged for my 1L Experience ?

It helps more than not having the job. Honestly, unless you get a job that guarantees you a position for 2L summer to be considered for a permanent position after that, all jobs are created equal. It's what you make of it. What do you mean by "It's what you make of it" ----- is that how I spin it o...

Re: How would I be judged for my 1L Experience ?

The only red flag (and I mean this kindly) is that you’re obsessing enough over small details and what you think you lack that you risk coming across almost apologetic in an interview. Try really hard not to do that.

Re: How would I be judged for my 1L Experience ?

You are way overthinking this. You seem to be focusing on all the things you think you lack and it’s not going to help you to work this way. 1) if this is your first time working in Asia, why would firms worry about your ties to the US? You said you’re a US citizen - do you have other ties to Asia t...

Re: SCOTUS and Other Big Cases

That’s true. It just still rubs me the wrong way to distance this entirely from the defendant’s rights. (Like I get that the absence of a juror of a particular race doesn’t mean that the jury is actually unfair. It’s just the rhetoric of it.)

Re: SCOTUS and Other Big Cases

That seems pretty disingenuous too - it’s not the juror’s right to be on the jury that’s at issue, but the defendant’s right to a fair/representative jury.

Re: Europe?

So the current clerkship hiring plan wouldn't let you apply until June of your 2L summer, but not all judges follow that plan, and some (unknown number) who do will hire as soon as it opens up, so presumably before you'd leave. But some judges might hire later, into fall of 3L. That said, most judge...

Re: Any other opinions on expressing interest in niche area?

You may not have meant you would say this literally, but don't say "I am interested because of your culture." First, "your culture" is generic and could apply to any firm - you would need to say something like "your culture of [whatever - entrepreneurship, early responsibility, whatever you believe ...

Yeah, you don’t need to worry this much. No one expects you to know what you want to do yet, but like lolwat said, don’t talk about transactional to a lit boutique or vice versa. Also there are tons of K-JDs. Don’t think of yourself as being at a disadvantage because it will show in how you present ...

You don’t turn anything down until you have another job lined up.

(Unless you know for certain that you absolutely wouldn’t work there in a million years and would go to Starbucks first, and even then, it’s risky.)

1) seminars are fine. Don’t take, say, all seminars, or too many that are, say, “Law and Literature” or otherwise sound really fluffy. (If I can nitpick just a bit, if you’re in law school now, you’re not really interning at a law firm; you’re working at one.) I don't get the difference to be honest. My resume calls it an intern and that is my official title at the firm. What did you mean by working? EDIT:Not sure whom you address...
