Re: Careers in legal aid

Hi all! Circling back to Dickinson Law, you think I'd have a good shot at legal aid in Philly? I think I would enjoy living there. My mom was raised there, so she's excited about the prospect. I'm not seeing a whole lot of Dickinson Law representation in PA legal aid on LinkedIn. There are a few Di...

Re: Careers in legal aid

I don't think I'd mind. I have immediate family scattered in the northeast (DC, NYC, Boston), so I wouldn't feel alone. My mom's nearing retirement age, so she may even join me there soon after law school. I'm currently single. I'll reach out to Dickinson for those stats and see if they can connect ...

Re: Careers in legal aid

By my interactions with faculty and staff, I’m getting a good vibe from ASU. When would be a good time to ask ASU to reconsider my scholarship? Should I wait to receive more offers to maximize leverage, or should I get the ball rolling now? I’ve already inquired about the negotiation procedure - the...

Re: Careers in legal aid

Guys, I've got another question. I'm monolingual. I'm seeing lots of legal services-jobs postings preferring Spanish speakers. Should I make a serious effort to learn the language?

Re: Careers in legal aid

I have yet to hear from CA schools. I've applied to UCI, Davis, Hastings, Loyola, Pepperdine, USD. LMU is not known to be generous. Also, their jobs data make me wary.

Thank you all! I really appreciate your thoughts and opinions.

Re: Careers in legal aid

Dickinson's offer does not include living costs. I can ask them to reconsider. My personal savings could cover my costs of living, but I've been advised to take out loans for any law school-related expenses. With my current offer, I estimate leaving Dickinson with $60K debt. With ASU Law, I'd antici...

Re: Careers in legal aid

No conditions. You think it would be difficult to secure work outside of central PA with a JD from Dickinson?

Re: Careers in legal aid

... Oh, wow. Okay. I wasn't sure about PSLF - seemed a little sketch. It makes sense for me to stay in SoCal. I work for a large nonprofit here, and we have contracts with the legal aid/nonprofit firms in the area. I guess I should connect with you guys when I have more offers in hand. Thanks for yo...

Re: Careers in legal aid

Yeah, I'm pretty open. I would prefer to live and work in California (my home state), but I'm not expecting competitive offers from CA law schools. I'm debt averse.

Re: Careers in legal aid

Amazing. Thanks very much! Appreciate you! Question : A legal aid attorney suggested I research states and organizations via LSC. Funding and opportunities for legal aid work in AZ seem a bit scarce. Should I take this into consideration in comparing offers? Do you imagine it would it be very diffic...

Re: Careers in legal aid

Hello All, Decisions are still pending for the 21-22 application cycle, but I have already received a generous offer from ASU Law. I'm currently living in Southern California, and I have several years of WE in a social work-adjacent, human services position. I am committed to public service and publ...
