Re: Big Law to Government Procurement

OP here - it is not a JD-required job, but I will be starting at GS11 because of my JD. What really appealed to me about the job was that it seems really nice for work life balance. You can clock in and out whenever you want as long as you get 40 hours a week, you can use 3 hours of work time a wee...

Finally, there's some risk that procurement reform renders your skill set obsolete. But that would require a functional congress, so you're probably safe there.
Yeah…..that could happen in almost any legal field.

Re: Big Law to Government Procurement

If OP’s procurement job with the feds is a lawyer job, then I think it is fine move to that job. After working a few years in the procurement job, you can lateral to other random lawyer jobs in other random federal agencies (probably not prestigious ones). I think you’re looking for a cushy law job ...

Re: Big Law to Government Procurement

I think Pancakes is concerned that you’re going into a non-lawyer GS 11 federal job.

Would this be a lawyer job?

(If you go do a non-lawyer job, it may close off a lot of future legal careers in the future.)

Re: 8 weeks since references/app

No, you’re not ghosted. The representative said a senior attorney would get back to you. If no senior attorney contacts you, just give it a few days and politely follow up.

Legal aid organizations can be busy, and hiring a new attorney may take longer than it would at a big law firm.

Re: Is it really the normal and not the rule to be eventually asked to leave at BigLaw?

I mean being counsel is kind of like being an O-6 for 20 years. Lol, isn’t it the O-5 who doesn’t make O-6 and then retires to become a DOD GS civilian employee? Do you all or OP think that an up-or-out system motivates lawyers to keep working hard? Is there a more effective system to achieve that ...

Re: City Attorney's Office?

The questions can really vary from office to office. What kind of position is this in the city attorney’s office? Are you prosecuting at all? Civil defense litigation? Some general questions you might be asked: Why do you want to work here? What makes you want to leave big law? What makes you qualif...

Unlike with gov, I should clarify in full disclosure that I have never worked at a private company as in-house counsel. So take my comments for what they’re worth.

Re: Biglaw to Inouse/Government Exit Interview Question - Why are you leaving your job?

This is probably Interviewing 101, but try to make each answer have something that shows what you can contribute to the employer. You can talk about your own professional and personal development, but that should not be the focus. Keep trying to show the interviewer what you would do for the company...

Re: Is it really the normal and not the rule to be eventually asked to leave at BigLaw?

The practice is actually common in this country. The military uses this system, for example. “Keep the troops lean mean fighting machines!” I suppose. Up-or-out in the military is more for officers than for the troops, and the rationale is different—among other things, you need to constantly refres...

Another tip: don’t take on any big tasks during bar prep, IMHO.

If you smoke, don’t try to quit smoking during bar prep. For example.

Re: Gap in Resume?

Have you thought about volunteering during your resume gap? It’s probably the least desirable option, but at least you have no gap. I’m sure you could find a nonprofit to volunteer for. Even if you do just part-time, you could put it on your resume during the gap. But even if you do have a gap, I th...

Re: Is it really the normal and not the rule to be eventually asked to leave at BigLaw?

In many big law firms, it is traditionally the case, yes. It’s an “up or out” system meant to promote productivity and efficiency. So you never “rest on your laurels” or get stagnant. That is the intent at least. Not sure if effective. The practice is actually common in this country. The military us...

Those are strong stats. Throw your hat in the ring and see what happens. Don’t apply for just the T6, though.

P.S. Don’t apply to Notre Dame. See previously linked thread.

Did you make a decision, OP? If anyone is thinking of doing something similar, I would recommend planning to plan your life around the Army Reserve rather than vice versa.
