Re: BrainsyK's Guide to Pre-OCI

Thanks for this guide.

Do you guys recommend sending out the actual applications even if your school's guidelines prohibit that? Also, isn't it kind of odd to send a pre-OCI email app to a firm if they are coming to your school's OCI anyways?

Re: Columbia Students Taking Questions

I found professors assigned the work based on what they thought the class warranted (more often than not) rather than the credits awarded, so I avoided 2-credit classes like the plague, unless someone I knew vouched for them. Isn't that the problem with seminars too, or do professors kind of tone i...

Re: Senate Judiciary Committee Clerkship Interview

What exactly is this position? Is this what they were talking about a couple years ago where some Congresspeople, including Ted Cruz, wanted a Congressional clerk program akin to judicial clerkships?

Re: Columbia Students Taking Questions

The general consensus is that seminars are more work than they are worth in terms of credits, right?

Federal Security Clearance Timeline

I know there may be no answer to this, but how long does it typically take after submitting the SF85 and fingerprint form to hear back re: clearance? Can anyone provide some data points and anecdotes--especially people who didn't get the clearance due to drug use? And did they outright reject you or...

Re: How to ask an internship to let you know?

The State AG position is with the Appeals division, so IMO it's better than the job with the judge. I would write several appellate briefs at the State AG job. The job with the judge would sounds like it would involve mostly doing research to support the staff attorneys (no clerks at state appellate...

How to ask an internship to let you know?

I have an offer to intern with a state appellate judge, and I need to get back to them by April 12th. I also had a great interview with the State AG about a month ago. What would be the proper way to alert them to my other deadline and see if they could get back to me in time for me to make a proper...

I found the answer; they use the SF85 just like other federal agencies.

Worried about drug history.

USPS Background Check/Clearance

Does anyone know what type of background check/security clearance is required for a legal internship with the USPS?

Thanks.

Re: Which would you choose?

NYU on up will be able to place you geographically where you want, and I believe that maybe Michigan and UVA can as well (other people would know better). I think I would respond to why not Duke and Northwestern with a broader point: the rankings already incorporate a lot of information. Yes, they h...

Re: Which would you choose?

I don't plan on withdrawing from anywhere at this point. Rough calculations of COL differences between a place like NYU and UVA puts me at 75k more debt for NYU, which is on the conservative side. Haven't fully delved into it yet for the others. Northwestern would probably be less since Chi is more...

Re: Which would you choose?

If you already got into Columbia and Chicago and didn't get Hamilton or Ruby, then you're not getting it. This is def true for the Hamilton, I believe it is also the case for the Ruby. I would think it should be between UVA and NYU (maybe Mich should stay in play too, but simplify your life by taki...

I don't mean to sound like a dick, but I can't believe you're even asking this question LOL. Definitely take the internship abroad, that's awesome, congratulations. It is an experience firms will value more and it overall looks way better.

Why would you do this with engineering--take B school classes, which would be easier and seem less random/questionable to future employers.

Vetting Firms

Any tips for how to make the most of/what to look out for at these receptions firms throw? I get different vibes from the firms, but generally it's not like any firm comes across as a particularly bad place to work relative to the other ones.

Re: Asking Professors for Help Finding Internships

Thanks, that's good to hear.

Also since this prof specifically told me they've helped students secure internships and jobs before, I feel like if I started by saying "when I was an admit, you mentioned..." it might help.

Re: Asking Professors for Help Finding Internships

Thanks, that's good advice. I'll be prepared to talk about a couple places I've applied to within their general ambit, and clarify my interests, and hopefully that will get the conversation rolling, or at least be a decent preamble to a more direct ask, since it shows I am putting in work and not ju...

Re: Asking Professors for Help Finding Internships

The simple answer is, you should stop dancing around what you want and just ask the professor directly for help finding a job at the places you want. He was pretty clearly ready to help you, but you went in unprepared and didn't specify what you wanted. As for the article, I'm not sure what you mea...

Asking Professors for Help Finding Internships

1L here. Had office hours today with a professor who is a big name in the field. They have just 20m slots you sign up for. I had some time left at the end, and they asked what I was doing this summer. I said I don't know yet, and asked if they had any recommendations of where I should apply (which I...

Re: 1L/Diversity SA Thread 2019

What are peoples thoughts on sending in grades if they're not good enough? It's paranoid to think the recruiter will remember you ghosted them when August rolls around and that it would matter, right? Definitely send them. Especially to places you've already interviewed with. I had the same feeling...

Re: HYS v Hamilton (no help from family)

HLS's max aid is around $46k per year. Take the Hamilton. Unless finances are absolutely not and never going to be a concern (like, one's family is so wealthy that even sticker at Harvard would be nbd), a person would be an idiot to turn down the Hamilton. Such a nontrivial fuck up to pass on a Hami...
