Re: Federal Defender Taking Questions

I'm an Assistant Federal Public Defender. Ask me anything! How helpful is a federal clerkship in the career path to becoming a Federal PD? Do FPD offices hire attorneys from civil legal aid orgs or is it mostly state-level PDs and private sector big law refugees? Re: federal clerkships, they seem t...

Re: Are LRAPs Reliable?

The easiest way to tell if an LRAP is "reliable" is if it's tied to PSLF or not. I believe all of the T6 have disconnected their LRAP programs from PSLF, for instance, meaning they will continue whether government-backed PSLF continues or not. That's not to say an LRAP at another school that is tie...

Re: Harvard vs. Columbia $$ (vs. NYU?)

Thanks for the feedback, and glad to hear I'm thinking the right way here! Hiring for direct services seems to be largely a function of hands-on experience so I'm assuming the school name makes next to no difference, but for more competitive policy advocacy work (I'm thinking at places like Center ...

Re: WUSTL (full tuition) vs Vanderbilt $$ vs UCLA $$ vs Georgetown

Lolwat, but that circles back to the real difficult question here, which is whether the full ride from WUSTL outweighs that relevant (but seemingly not huge) advantage conveyed by Vandy with a $33k/year scholarship. If I were in OP's shoes, I'd lean WUSTL. Costs are the same for Vandy and WUSTL if ...

Re: UPDATED NYU $$$$ vs Penn $$$$ vs UVA $$$$ vs Duke $$$$ vs Harvard at Sticker

Im not a lawyer myself yet but work in PI legal field, but I can say that the NYU PI network is vast. Look up any major legal nonprofit whether it’s a PD’s Office, ACLU, EJI, Legal Aid offices, etc and there are tons of NYU grads. NYU is probably the most well-represented law school in the public in...

Re: Toll PI Scholar vs. Dillard

It sounds like you want to take the Dillard. If you would rather be at UVA, that seems like a good decision. As necho2 pointed out, the only potential game changer could be some remarkable institutional/alumni support associated with the Toll program. I do not get the impression that Toll is as reno...

Re: Public Interest Megathread for T14s (employment data, resources, testimonials)

It's a hard question to answer. The only ideal path is trying to get a Skadden fellowship and getting your foot in the door. If not, then two years clerking for district court and COA and then trying to go straight to impact lit is common, but you may end up at a firm for a bit. Sure there's a ton ...

Unfortunately I don't know the names of these scholarships or what they actually give (other than I believe Dillard is full at UVA?) so I'm not working with a full set of information here. But OP's choice seems to point towards Michigan, and George Marshall's choice seems to point towards UVA (only...

Why deplete your savings? That money will be something you wish you had when you become a PI attorney. Re: Lots of Fulls VS HYS

I don't know how the need-based aid schools will consider that funding from your undergrad, but it could be a significant factor in your cost of attendance there. Is it available strictly for tuition, or could you use it to deal with cost of living as well? If so, the answer is the Hamilton. I susp...

Re: LRAP/IBR/PSLF. How does it work? Let's find out!

Hmmm. That spreadsheet was made in 2016 so likely out of date. NU got a huge infusion of cash ($40 million) earmarked for PI in 2016 so it's likely that it's changed. EDIT: Nevermind, it's still the same. Yeah, that's not great. It's interesting that there's so much variation among the top schools....

Re: Public Interest Megathread for T14s (employment data, resources, testimonials)

So do NYU/CLS now have the best LRAPs aside from maybe Yale and Stanford? Certainly they provide the most flexibility by providing both PSLF and non-PSLF options with fairly generous salary allowances, dependent allowances, etc. It seems like NYU still has its one-time payment for those in the PSLF...

Northwestern decreased their ED scholarship from $150K to $120K http://www.law.northwestern.edu/admissions/applying/earlydecision.html Huge bummer. Was hoping they'd bump it up to 180k if anything.
