Re: Student Loans: Payment Options and Numbers
Nah no slam dunk benefit. Just a matter of a guaranteed 5.5% ROI for paying it now (but if you refi it would be lower) vs. whatever other return if you invest instead

Re: Student Loans: Payment Options and Numbers
isn't the obvious reason that it saves you $ in the long run to pay it now? bc once it's capitalized it's added to principal and accrues interest of its own

Re: Berkeley vs. NYU
It's possible to strike out as an AnBrycer in SF. I personally would take Berkeley here. Eta: It's my understanding that ASAP basically guarantees you a firm job *in NYC*. Not sure how much that helps folks who want to go to other markets. I'd be wary that choosing NYU --> spending 1L summer in NYC ...

Re: Stanford vs. Berkeley
You should keep in mind that SLS slightly increases the student budget 1L for the longer school year so you in all likelihood will lose some aid for 2L even without an SA. I went to SLS in your exact situation ($75K cost difference, targeting SF) but idk if it was worth it given the benefit of hinds...

Re: Poll: Biglaw in CA, Boston, or DC
What would you do if you struck out from SF/SV? It's hard bc if you end up striking out and going to NY as a fallback (just saying NY since it seems to be the safest backup market), you'll know you should've taken the money at Michigan. If you strike out at SF/SV from SLS and are truly SF/SV or bus...

Re: Poll: Biglaw in CA, Boston, or DC
anecdotally on the boalt aid front, i received very little need based aid (as in, much less than i received at SLS) but received a v generous matching award so I think it's super individualized. I really sold my SF or bust mentality in the matching essay fwiw.

Re: Poll: Biglaw in CA, Boston, or DC
It's hard to get your heart set on SF biglaw. People strike out there, even from SLS. Side note, are you using SF/SV interchangeably? Because SF proper is an even smaller market than SF/SV. If Boalt isn't doing anything for you, yeah I guess I'd go Stanford (esp bc IMO taking on $250K w rich family ...

Haha thank you for the advice you guys! I got a Ruby from UChi today, so... I think my decision is made? Lol Congrats! (If your decision isn’t made, I’ll be forced to slap you). Haha welll there's like a 5% chance that a miracle admission to Stanford might sway me, but other than that, very decided...

Re: Harvard ($32K/year) vs. Columbia (Hamilton)
I would go to Columbia and here's why: (1) Not being tied to LIPP and LIPP eligible jobs. If you go to a PPI firm/big nonprofit you could end up having to pay most/a lot of that debt back. Having low debt also gives you psychological freedom in a way that LIPP doesn't. (2) I wouldn't bank on being a...

Re: Harvard v. Stanford. v. Ruby @ Chicago
Are opportunities at Chicago for non-Ruby students really that much worse? I'm deciding between Harvard and Chicago with 1/2 tuition, and the fact that an actual Ruby winner is probably going to take H makes me feel like I'd be a fool to go to Chicago. No, they're not. Chicago routinely matches or ...

Re: Harvard v. Stanford. v. Ruby @ Chicago
I don't think I could justify turning down the Ruby in your situation from what I read in your post. FWIW, I turned it down primarily to stay close to my SO and family (a much smaller price difference in my case, but I did pay more). Your preference, which is clearly not Chicago, is worth some amoun...

Re: Forhdam (135k) vs NYU sticker vs. Upenn sticker
If you have test anxiety, even more reason to prep for the LSAT and retake. The LSAT (in my experience and opinion) is much easier to prepare for and do well on than 2 full sets of law school exams, which you'll need to do well on (in comparison to your equally talented and hardworking peers) to lan...

Also an URM question.... Do you think non-black Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans receive any type of URM boost over and above nonblack Latinxs of other ethnic groups? Or are all Latinx equally underrepresented for law school admissions purposes? Or are none of these folks getting an "URM" boost (...
