Re: Clerks Taking Questions

(b) We would also typically ask about a class or at least an academic interest, and tried to do that even for alumni applicants. I think I disagree with hollow's answer insofar as candidates most frequently gave bad/disqualifying answers to questions asking about substantive areas of interest -- we...

Re: Clerks Taking Questions

Here's a simple question with a very complex answer: what do you not say in clerkship interviews? I'm not talking about egregiously bad stuff, but stuff that the judge doesn't want to hear but the candidate doesn't realize isn't the "right" answer? Also, aye or nay on writing out intended talking p...

Re: Clerks Taking Questions

To the above Q about class choices: We ask a version of the "favorite/least favorite class" question, but it is mostly just to see what you say. A lot of people just go with their best and worst grade, and don't have much to say beyond that. Others talk about the substance of a course that they were...

Re: Clerks Taking Questions

Ok, follow-up. Bracket in the redactions or no brackets? I bracketed in the redactions in my first sample. I think some will advise that brackets are appropriate, but as a reviewer I find them irritating. Especially because these kind of redactions end up being all over the document, clouding it wi...

You all should be aware of my friends at Cohen & Green https://femmelaw.com/
Mx. Green was previously at a biglaw firm, where I believe they were out. They are historically very open to being contacted, fwiw.

Re: I'm a Public Defender AMA

For any Federal PDs in here: How/when do you investigate your cases? (interview alibi witnesses, visit crime scenes, etc) I've read a bunch of "A Day in the Life" type threads by PDs, and it is hard for me to understand when or how you actually do these things. Curious as to why you want an answer ...

Re: Clerks Taking Questions

Does it matter if I swap out a recommender for my OSCAR application? About a month ago, I sent in paper apps with Recommenders A, B, and C. I'm monitoring OSCAR as listings open up, and one just recently came up. I applied to this judge previously in a paper application. Would it matter if my OSCAR...

Re: Options with median GPA from CCN

1L here at a CCN. Disappointingly, got median grades last semester. I am getting pretty spooked and dismayed, since I want a clerkship after graduation and was also flirting with the possibility of academia. Plus, it will suck to have a potentially poor selection of offers after OCI (no Cleary or W...

Re: 2018-2019 Post-Clerkship Hiring

Hey all: looking for some advice on contacting a firm. Before Christmas I emailed a partner at my first choice firm, who replied and said he would get back to me. I haven’t heard anything yet. I heard back from a different firm in the same city and I am flying out there for a call-back. I would lik...

Re: 2L Summer Q

I think I basically agree with the above. If State A is your strong preference, but you are nervous about leaving your eggs all in that basket, then apply to both, but hustle State A as hard as you can. I don't really understand why you are getting barred in both states? Or did I misunderstand?

You don't want to include an "up" option?

Re: Clerks Taking Questions

Thanks guys! I meant to also ask (hazards of phone typing) if you'd say I'm in range for district courts. Our clerkship counsellor is just so nice I don't think he'd say no to my face. If you are "Anonymous6482" from above, then yes, you should be able to get *a* district court clerkship. Might be ...

Re: Clerks Taking Questions

I'm stacking two district court clerkships, because (1) I really wanted to work with both judges, (2) the second one is in a city I might want to stay in, and (3) they pay better than most other public interest jobs I could get at the moment and still clock time towards the PSLF.

Re: Clerks Taking Questions

Getting slightly off-topic though I suppose. For clerkships you'll likely have more classes on the transcript you submit, so in theory it could matter more. I just never found judges or their clerks cared about which classes I took; but I've only had maybe 7-8 interviews so that's a very small samp...

Re: How to find out if a judge is not on the plan?

Is there there a significant risk in blanketing applications to judges as a 2L without first checking whether or not if each individual judge is on the plan? I.e. would you undermine a potential future application by sending an unsolicited physical application to a judge who is adhering to the plan...

Re: Developing a Clerkship Application Strategy

Oh, and re: bar, it depends on the judge. Some judges want you to be barred in the state you're clerking in (I have a feeling those judges also want you to have strong ties to that state, or strong reasons to stay in it), others just want you to be barred anywhere (my judge was that way), and still ...

Re: Developing a Clerkship Application Strategy

How high up in your class are you, and where does your law school rank (approximately)? If you're clerking federally, you don't need to be licensed. I don't know about state. I'm guessing the judge you interned for doesn't hire former interns? The judge I interned for will have mandatory retirement...

Re: UChicago Students and Grads Taking Questions and providing positive externalities

I'm thinking about doing some side work during my first year. It would be pretty low key, maybe 5 (at most 10) hours a week. The work is fairly easy, although time-consuming, and the employer is very laid-back and relaxed. Is this a bad idea or have other people worked during their first year? If y...

How tight is your financial situation? Can you stand to sit out 4-6 weeks worth of pay while also poss...

Re: 3.85 HYPS, 172, Truly Unique Softs (?)

Because "unique" has been so bastardized (as "literally"), one might consider the modifier "truly" to be a defense against the bastardization, and not a furtherance of it. In other words, by denoting that this is a "true" example of something "unique," the modifier "truly" is casting shade on the us...
