Re: PSA for 2021-22 Applicants: Avoid Notre Dame Like the Plague

It would be extraordinarily concerning if this were to become standard practice. Right now we've a got a system that generally gives people time to weigh their offers, go on visits, and make decisions without much time pressure. The only endgame for the Notre Dame strategy is for the class to includ...

Dang, what happened to NYU? 7 points seems like more than statistical noise or self-selection. (Perhaps it's a combination of both).
Definitely looks like self-selection. They sent 94 folks to public interest, up from 74 and 61 in 2019 and 2018. That's a huge percentage of the class.

Duke's is out. https://law.duke.edu/sites/default/file ... ss2020.pdf

(I would do the calculations for you but I don't remember what BL is considered--250+?)

Only one unemployed, but fed clerk numbers dropped way back down to 25.

Re: Careers in legal aid

The offices in the small towns certainly are, but I'm based in one of the metro areas where they're more specialized. I'm not super picky though, so at least at first I'm kind of hoping they throw a bit of everything at me.

I'm not really sure if we have any active posters in that type of legal aid. What kind of work will you be doing? Mostly housing work, which is what I've done through law school, but definitely want to help with the tax clinic where I can. We'll see--managing attorney said that people can rotate ar...

Careers in legal aid

hello! Noticed we didn't have a thread for us legal aid folks. I'll be starting this fall with a legal aid firm in the lower midwest/south-central--any other legal aid folks around here? Mostly I just wanted to start the community here, but also open to hearing if anyone had ideas about how to impro...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

i don't know if 20K is small potatoes. maybe for some people it's insignificant, but not to me - the premise of the question is that the money *is* valuable, and i need to balance saving it over perhaps having a better shot at DC BL Oh yeah, I wasn't saying it's small potatoes--I was just saying th...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

how about duke for fedgov/dc biglaw? i'm trying to wrangle a bigger scholarship. would 85-90K in debt (about 20K less than UVA) make Duke worth it? Or is there a meaningful difference in job outcomes between the two schools? GPA cutoffs for DC firms at Duke's OCI were fairly high-ish, at least comp...

Re: Law School w/o intent of being a FT lawyer?

I strongly identify with a lot of what you said. A couple things that came to mind: 1. The law is fundamentally a service profession. That's why lawyers are so tied to the billable hour. That's not to say that there aren't attorneys who work in different ways, but that you've gotta get your start at...

I am from a rural-ish state and have no real connections to any good-sized markets. My preferred locations for after graduation are Texas/Chicago/DC/Secondary Market>NYC>LA/SF/SV, but there is nowhere that I am completely against ending up in. The comparative lack of interest in CA would be determi...

Re: Which would you choose?

Are you saying that you think going to NYU gives me less of a chance to clerk than say Duke or UVA? I often assume a lot of that stuff is self selection, but I could be wrong. I would also assume that. I suspect the combination of PI focus + folks doing transactional biglaw + wanting to pay down ma...

That impression you got of WUSTL was very very different from that I got as far as the PI culture there goes, curious what others think about that. (And again, thanks to everyone for their input). My input is just based off of ASW and talking to current/admitted students last year and is therefore ...

How much of your experience at your firm do you think you needed before you could do what you do now? Like, did you have all the contacts/knowledge/skill that you needed after your fourth/fifth/sixth years?

Congrats; sounds like you're in a good place now.

Re: W&M (134k) v. Boulder (126k) for JAG?

I'm not going to say anything you don't already know, but W&M is a great place to be relative to JAG/military ties. Not many Navy bases near Boulder. I'd second Stranger's comment that the COA difference is negligible. But I'd say $6000 for textbooks is way too high. If you shop around it's not hard...
