Re: Holding back a class year at new firm

I doubt this will have long-term implications. And +1 to heythatslife, I'm familiar with multiple friends who lateraled taking a class year cut for various reasons. Your logic, IMO, makes sense.

Re: LAteral bonus discussion

Are you using a recruiter?

Most of my friends who lateraled after qualifying for their current bonus were made whole by their new firm. I also got an email from a recruiter (so take with a grain of salt) today and all the moves indicated the firm was willing to pay you your earned bonus.

+1 to all of the above.

I've listed my affinity group involvement since 1L year...9 years ago (soft cry)

Re: How would I be judged for my 1L Experience ?

The school you're attending (and depending on school, the grades you got) will have more impact on your 2L OCI outcomes than what you did your 1L Summer.

Re: Risky Cover Letter Move?

Thank you, sorry, I missed the reply earlier. By firms looking at it apathetically, does that mean no harm or gains (For a rising 2L to base his/her cover letter all on his/her 1L summer in big law)? Correct. In my experience, if you don't emphasize and particular experience firms won't care becaus...

Re: Risky Cover Letter Move?

I don't think it's risky at all to emphasize the current work you're doing, especially since it's some of the only experience you have at this point. Firms know a few things i) a lot of student won't have much (if any) substantive experience, and ii) a lot of students are still going to be figuring ...

Re: Risky Cover Letter Move?

Just to give a holistic response --

You're talking about a cover letter you're wanting to use for a specific firm during OCI that focuses, almost exclusively, on your currentl 1L summer gig? Can you share the range of school you're att? HYS/CCN/T14/T50/Strong Regional/ etc.

Have you looked at the various in-house compensation surveys? Also, are you thinking of doing the hunt alone or with a recruiter?

Re: Europe?

I have a friend who went to LS in America and currently practices in Paris. Granted he did some 4 year program that saw him get his JD here and whatever the french equivalent is in France (forgive my ignorance). Got his start doing arbitration. I can reach out to him if you have some questions.

Re: Weird law school classes

I took a course called "Resisting Injustice" It was a class where we studied the patriarchy and how it impacts society (I don't remember anything even remotely related to the law being discussed), and my final paper was an inspection of Male-Male expressions of friendship particularly within the Chr...

I chose NYU and I'm super happy that I did! Thank you all for your help!!
Congrats! I'm sure you'll have a great time there. I honestly only have good things to say about NYU and the student body there.

Re: UPDATED NYU $$$$ vs Penn $$$$ vs UVA $$$$ vs Duke $$$$ vs Harvard at Sticker

Both are great schools. As an NYU grad I'm biased towards NYU. I'd say look at how your ASWs go, also ask the school to connect you with current students or recent alumni who want to do/are doing what you're looking to do.

Re: NYU VS COLUMBIA (but different than the other times)

Pretty much +1 to everything that's already been said. And I'll just anecdotally add that RTK recipients I know in and around my year (2013) are doing great work that they seem to really enjoy.

Either choice is great, but if you choose Columbia be prepared to lose in basketball every year.

Re: Deciding if Law School is the Right Path?

Anyways, OP, if you're still in UG reach out to the office of alumni relations (or whatever you might call it) and see if they have any active, attorney alumni who might be interested in talking with you. I'm active with my UG and regularly take short meetings with currently UGs thinking about LS. G...

Re: 2019 TX 1L SA Thread

UVA2B, do you have any insight as to whether turning down a 1L summer offer to a firm in Texas forecloses the chance to summer with them 2L summer? I did a 1L SA in Dallas many summer ago. I rejected an offer from one firm to accept an offer from another firm in the same city. Pretty much +1 to eve...

Re: Lit or Transactional

Majored in Finance in UG which heavily influenced my decision to go the transactional route. The only types of litigation I enjoyed were appellate (which I, admittedly, wasn't disciplined enough to pursue) and Securities Lit. Being in-house, I welcome automation. There's so much I do in my role that...

I'm five years in (not in BigLaw), and it wasn't until aobut 6 months ago that I learned to just trust my gut, know that I'm smart, know that, though mistakes will be made, it's important to a) avoid deal-breaker mistakes (missing deadlines, like lolwat said) and b) learn when I do make a mistake an...

A few months ago I was flown in for an in-house opening. According to the recruiter, the person they ultimately hired was someone with 12 years more experience to join their group (fortune company with +100B in rev). I got to final round interview with a privately held company with global operation...
