Re: ***WISE COUNSEL NEEDED - INQUIRE WITHIN***
Yeah sorry OP my intent wasn't to resurrect Michigan as an option. Your decision is yours and we won't change that. I was pointing out that there is a huge disconnect in what the wisdom of the masses advise for you vs. what you are most interested in, which suggests that there is something in your v...

Re: ***WISE COUNSEL NEEDED - INQUIRE WITHIN***
...So, OP in your last thread you had a whopping 100 people weigh in with votes (a commanding 60 of whom suggested Michigan for you, which you have now eliminated as an option) and literally zero of those votes went to Chicago, and now you're saying Chicago is truly your top choice, and seeking more...

Re: Northwestern ($$) vs Duke ($$)
OP I'm also really surprised to hear that Duke is supposed to have higher COL. That doesn't sound right at all, especially once you are looking at housing? Have you checked into specific places you would be renting from (or peeked in the respective class of '21 threads in this forum) to get a better...

Re: Duke ($$$) or Chicago ($)
I think it's not helpful to castigate OP for high- flying dreams without also attempting to help them make their decision with more constructive feedback. 0Ls don't have a good barometer of what's realistic because they haven't had the time spent in the industry (not their fault), so I'm not surpris...

Re: UVA (sticker) vs. Columbia (sticker)
All told, I won't actually graduate with a lot of debt. Without going into detail, I'll be able to finance law school without having to resort to borrowing that much. But of course, there is opportunity cost. That's $300k+ that you could be investing. So it's not as simple as saying, I have the mon...

Re: PSA: Do Not Pay Full Price for a Bar Course (NEGOTIATE!)
When I was a 3L, my class rep and the regional Barbri person both reached out to me in the second week of April, when the "deadline" had passed, after I mentioned to the rep that I hadn't purchased any classes and was planning on self studying. And without a word of negotiation from me, they had alr...

Re: Worth it to go to Harvard ASW (or any other school's)
OP, if money is a major concern maybe you could ask Harvard's admission folks to get you in touch with 1 or 2 other students visiting for ASW to see about rooming together in a hotel, so at least that way you cut down on lodging costs a considerable amount by splitting it up. Or, not sure if this is...

Re: Vandy vs Waitlists vs reapply
I'm sorry you hate your job. What kind of law do you want to practice, what are your salary expectations, and are you only interested in working in California long term or do you have interest in other markets as a backup / in what markets do you have demonstrable ties? Also: I'm sure you know about...

Re: Lateral salary negotiation for a junior
This might be obvious, but have you looked them up on NALP to see if they're a NALP firm? If so you'll at least see starting salary, and you could extrapolate from there. Knowing what they are offering to your class year is important, because yes, if you happen to ask for a salary that is several ma...

Re: Biglaw to public defender
I couldn't tell if youre saying you plan to accept the biglaw offer and work there for 3-4 years after graduation, or if you're saying you're only doing biglaw this summer and then you're back looking on the market. I've assumed the former for purposes of the following advice: Have you ascertained h...

^ Fair enough. The "eh, fine, you're not gonna listen to me anyway" last part of my answer is throwaway language anyway. Agreed that reasonable minds can differ on the value of the $40k difference. I was keeping in mind that I have no idea where this person is from and what their backup/ secondary m...

Re: T20 with $ or TT with $$$?
In your original post you called UMN your dream school and you want to end up in MN. Given how regional all of your options are, I think your best option is to retake and reapply for more money from the schools that feed into the MN market. And remove from the equation the schools that don't feed in...

Re: UVA (sticker) vs. Columbia (sticker)
There's a lot in here that suggests to me you'd benefit from a year or two (at least) working, perhaps as a paralegal, to improve your admissions chances and also to improve your job options down the road and to get a better sense of the legal world. Biglaw is not the sort of thing that most people ...

Re: Recruiters entitled to fee for same firm but different position?
The agreement that gets signed between the recruiter and the firm answers the question of whether the firm owes a fee. You're not privvy to the agreement, and it gets negotiated to different time limits based on the relationship, so you probably won't get an accurate answer here. But it is not unusu...

Re: Question re: June LSAT Retake
It's definitely not unheard of for people to be admitted in June/July following the summer score release, but consider the fact that all good schools have deposit deadlines in the spring. That means if you get admitted in the summer it's either a not- great school that has rolling admissions deadlin...

Re: UT or Vandy for Cali/NY?
If they're the same COA and you're cool with both TN and TX as the respective back up markets and you have ties, then I say UT, if for no other reason than the fact that the market's starting salary is much higher in TX than in TN.

Re: How to quit before finding another job?
Are you talking with recruiters yet? I think you should get 1 or 2 good people actively marketing your resume, if you haven't already. Finding another job takes a lot of time, so you might as well get some more hands on deck to hasten the process so you can get out of this environment. Are you in to...

Re: PLEASE HELP - how to switch markets/how does 3L OCI work if you have a clerkship?
Long story short, I wouldn't worry about it now too much. You're in a good spot. Tons of people switch firms/markets after clerkships and don't end up going to the firm they summered with, and bigger firms tend to expect some kind of attrition like this. As long as you're not a dick about reneging, ...

Re: How do you get off of a case you're assigned to?
Do you know for sure you're expected to stay involved? I know doc review is bad, no one enjoys it and it's kinda expected as a crappy rite of passage for juniors. But once doc review is done, in the lead-up to trial, are you aware of what work in the case might be parceled out to you? It's possible ...

Re: Resources at Law Schools
Wouldn't read much into that. It's a school mentality thing. At top schools they expect you'll pass the bar. They don't expend a lot of resources to guiding you through the prep because they expect/ assume most all will pass without problem. The limited research re: gpa/lsat scores bears out that th...

Re: WUSTL ($$$$) this cycle vs. Northwestern ED ($$$) next cycle?
First things first, email each of the T14s you're waiting on, let them know you have a deadline in early April and request that they expedite an admissions and financial aid decision on your file if they can. If they say no, oh well no harm no foul, but it's a better strategy than just sitting and w...

Yeah, this happens sometime. It's better to do it sooner than later, before you fall behind too far on the skills development. If there's any way you can get involved on a lit project (or a project with lit components - volunteer to pick up and/or observe whatever you can) or even a pro bono lit pro...

I'm still of the opinion that you would benefit from a tutor who can help with test anxiety, because I think this is the sort of issue that benefits from you getting some in-person advice with someone working through specific examples and strategies. If you're not gonna do that, idk maybe you could ...
