Re: Criminal Defense

Haven’t seen a lot action in here recently. How is everyone ? I'm getting the solo practice itch again. How much did you have saved before you took the plunge? Or did you know you work have the work to cover overhead right off the bat? Wife works and has our health insurance covered but she doesn't...

Little bit of the same I’ve had to start taking on auto accidents to supplement my revenue while the criminal stuff bounces back. Unfortunately the no jury t...

Re: Criminal Defense

Generally speaking, How much do you make per year as a private solo or small firm crim defense attorney? Really depends on market and experience. I live in a large metro area so there is a lot of competition. The most experienced lawyers who practice only criminal defense can take on high level fel...

Re: Criminal Defense

Solo criminal defense here. AMA. PD here. The one thing I really don't get is how you come up with fee structure. Flat/hourly. How you decide what is worth what Usually criminal is all flat. Some times “tier fee” where it’s flat up until trial and if client wants to go through with trial it’s the s...

LL.M

I went to a super TTTT for my JD so I’d like an upgrade in alma mater on my resume along with some time to network up there to get a feel for the market. Anyone know if the FSU LLM is tough to get into? Thanks

Re: Criminal Defense

Damn that sucks. But as we know, this is the nature of the beast. The DA will always have the advantage over our clients in most instances for the stupidest reasons. My crim case load is lower in count again. I find this fluctuation to be fairly common among the other criminal defense attorneys in m...

Had trial scheduled for yesterday. Learned earlier in the week that court was shutting down early yesterday and today. Told DA when first got there that we should just continue the case cause no way we were gonna get to it. 2 hours later, yea let's just continue it. (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
Lol DA gonna DA

Nice. For your sanity, hopefully not in that order! Family law stuff makes me pull my hair out, and I don't even do family law. Yea man the family stuff sucks but it does pay well. Picked up a couple new criminal cases nothing crazy though. Just glad to be back in real court. It’s tough when your m...

I'm interested in this practice area. What's a "day in the life" type of experience and what sort of CLEs should I be on the lookout for? Any advice for breaking into this area?

Re: Criminal Defense

Are you on any kind of court appointed counsel list so you could rep defendants that the public defenders office has a conflict with? I know a couple criminal defense solos who get steady work from that. The pay rates are low, but it is steady work they appreciate. That's what I'm currently doing. ...

Re: Labor & Employment

Any union/plaintiff-side L&E lawyers out there who can share their experiences? I'm interested in this as well. I don't do L&E but I am connected to a union president who has been trying to get me to represent them for months. Seriously considering scooping them up as a client but I've never done L...

Our county needs people on the juvenile felony list but I feel like 7 months experience and no juvenile training would make it a bad idea.
I actually enjoy juvenile delinquency cases more than the typical misdemeanor/felony. They're tough to come by though

Is Avvo useful at all?
No. It sucks imo.
I agree avvo is terrible, but it seems like a lot of criminal defense lawyers in my area use it heavily.
I've seen a lot of guys put their rating on their websites for advertisement purposes but it's still pretty bad

Very good friend of mine just failed the North Carolina Bar for the third time and he is not barred in any other jurisdiction. The insight is appreciated Easy-E. In South FL, we have a large PI presence as I'm sure you can imagine. I'm one of those attys that won't touch a PI case but will gladly refer it out for a fee though I wonder how much I'm passing up. I've referred two cases out in 2018 already We get a lot of work...

Edit: what market/ how much do you take home a year Truly unbiased opinion is that unless you go to Harvard or Yale, where you studied doesn't matter. If you are trying to stick around...

What kind of stuff keeps you up at night/what’s your biggest fear being a young solo attorney? That's a great question.. I sleep pretty well at night but if there is one thing that kind of keeps me in edge is fear of the unknown/future. I wonder how my practice is going to look a few years from now...
