Re: UVA c/o 2022 Applicants (2018-2019)

Fair enough, also need to get on the housing thing. I think my S.O. and I are probably doing that in the next week or two. I think I'll probably go ahead and move in July and give myself a bit of time to acclimate and honestly just to have something like a month of doing nothing before school starts.

Re: UVA $$ vs WUSTL $$$$

Would say I'm leaning UVA at the moment. ASW didn't really assuage my fears the school leans conservative for my taste, but the staff seem great/beloved and the students seemed to love it there. Majority of family and friends think that's the call when I explain job placement, loan repayment program...

Re: Which would you choose?

If I had these choices (so a much much higher GPA) and goals, NYU probably, though the DC bit makes UVA also justifiable as COL will be way less.

Ah, no, mine is "Scholar in Law" (one of many with that name I think), I assume I'm in a lower tier than you. I don't think my strata gets that call.

Re: UVA $$ vs WUSTL $$$$

Let me ask the UVA majority: If I somehow could negotiate a stipend from Wash U (doubtful) would that change your answer? I'm not sure whether you've had your "convo with the Dean" to personalize your scholarship yet, or received the personalized version if you have. But wanted to say, anecdotally,...

That impression you got of WUSTL was very very different from that I got as far as the PI culture there goes, curious what others think about that.
(And again, thanks to everyone for their input).

Re: UVA $$ vs WUSTL $$$$

Is your SO going to be working? Will your SO have good job opportunities there? I raise this because of the potential risk of having to take out more money than expected once you get there and are established. And you won't be able to change your mind at beginning of 2L year. Yes and I'd think so, ...

Re: UVA $$ vs WUSTL $$$$

Just to clarify, you say $100k debt in tuition alone for UVA. How much more do you estimate your COL costs to be? And will those costs be debt financed? Total rent would be $30Kish over 3 years at the place we'd likely move split with SO so $15K plus utilities and food (and I'm very frugal, shop at...

Objectively, six figure debt is too scary if you're going to be working a PI job.
Wait, is this a vote switch for just further discourse on my misuse of that word (which, fair enough)?

Re: UVA $$ vs WUSTL $$$$

Thank you for the input so far. It's very helpful already in assuaging doubts. It was my gut feeling that UVA is the objectively right call here, I'm just very terrified of debt (also, WUSTL have been so nice to me :( I know it shouldn't be a factor but I feel bad).

UVA $$ vs WUSTL $$$$

$90K from UVA. In-state. So a tiny bit under half, right at $100K debt in tuition alone Full ride from WUSTL. Have a very cheap place we could live there. Also have $100K from Vandy (tuition of $80K) but didn't care for the school or city but if someone wants to talk me into that one now is the time...

Re: UVA Law Students & Graduates Taking Questions

Thank you, that's helpful. I should say I know I probably named like the 2 hardest progressive PI groups to get but they were just the first two I thought of, doesn't necessarily need to be quite that level of prestige.

What is the argument for USC over WUSTL, I'm curious? Many people have that but WUSTL seems to have both arguably better employment and significantly higher medians.

Re: UVA Law Students & Graduates Taking Questions

I'm trying to decide between $$- at UVA and $$$$ at WUSTL and am fairly debt averse. I would like to do PI in the vein of ACLU or SPLC and I know UVA gives a much better chance at this. However, I just wanted to ask, what's the chance of it in more absolute terms? What % of students who want that ca...
