Re: Help Me Decide (Penn/UVA/Michigan)

Look, if the money is good *and* you'd be happier at Michigan, that's a pretty sweet combo. It's one of the very few schools that truly places around the country (there are several that *can*, but only a handful really *do*). That's obviously no guarantee of getting a particular city that you want, ...

Woo UVA! Love it. What's behind Chicago's huge gain though? They usually absolutely dominate these placements.
Small class size helps them, probably some FedSoc pipeline. But that's still the highest total anyone has had going back at least a decade.

i feel like FC numbers need to break it out to fedsoc and non-fedsoc
While that would be quite useful in evaluating a school's inherent placement power, I'm not sure those numbers are actually available.

Re: Employment Statistics by School - C/O 2019 rolling out + C/O 2012-2017 data

Stanford - 72.0% (-3.8%)
Harvard - 70.9% (-3.2%)
Chicago - 88.7% (+9.0%)
Virginia - 82.9% (+4.6%)
Berkeley - 67.4% (-2.4%)
Vanderbilt - 60.0% (-1.9%)

Mild drops for Stanford, Harvard, Berkeley, and Vanderbilt. Decent gain for Virginia. And holy shit, look at that gain for Chicago!

Re: Employment Statistics by School - C/O 2019 rolling out + C/O 2012-2017 data

New employment statistics are rolling out! Here's the first few I've seen: Michigan - 67.5% (-0.6%) Wisconsin - 17.5% (-5.1%) I'm unfamiliar with the intricacies of this data, but that seems... not bad for the COVID era? Honestly, it seems like statistical noise to me. Most single year shifts are n...

Re: CUNY Law vs New York Law School

Yeah, knowing your goals and current employment would be helpful, especially for explaining why you're determined to go to law school part time rather than going the traditional route (and yes, I get that you're a non-traditional student--so am I, but I still went full-time).

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

No way I believe that zoom law school is worse than the real thing. Yup, it's not that bad at all. Lectures can be kinda brutal/hard to pay attention to over zoom. But any kind of socratic class works just as well as in person imo. And it's pretty nice to be able to just roll out of bed and hop on ...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

the other thing that might change the calculation here is a permanent WFH/remote option. if law students are allowed to do remote learning indefinitely, that could presumably shave about 35-40K off of the COA, reducing the time that would need to be spent in a high-paying job like biglaw. has anyon...

Re: Do international students get Ruby’s?

From data and ABA reports it's clear UChicago has a bias against international students. But, as an international student got a Ruby? 6 posts · Why do you say they have a bias against international students? Empirically, UChicago accepts very few people with non-U.S./Canadian bachelor's degrees (th...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

The good news is, even if you go to biglaw, you likely won't be trapped in biglaw for long. The tendency to push people out after a few years is often a driver of the move to government and in-house positions. You're not going to make partner and spend your career there just by accident.

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

Yeah, if the price on these is the same, UVA is probably your best option. Not by so much as to rule out Duke entirely if you love Durham, but I think with your blend of goals, UVA is the best play. Still going to wait on one of HYS and one of CCN, but yeah, that's where I'm leaning. Looking forwar...

Wait Ruby is full ride + 20k/yr? And Chicago has Nando's? Easiest decision in the world Haha well I've never tried nandos but good to know. Also not to sure of how well I'll do in law school so at the very least I'm still considering Yale, that 20k stipend seems like an amazing deal though. Hopeful...

Re: Ruby v. Hamilton v. Yale

UChi is also a biglaw factory. The marginal difference in their initial biglaw placement is mostly made up in Chicago's advantage in clerkships. We've had a lot of X vs. Ruby threads, but barring an extremely personalized situation that makes Chicago untenable, the answer is the same: just take the ...

Where do you want to practice? Does it matter to you? Where do you have ties? Are any of these schools that are located somewhere you know you wouldn't be happy for three years? Are any of them located somewhere you'd really like to live and work? I have a hard time seeing an argument for keeping y...

Re: Baguette Applies to Law School

You're definitely too early in the cycle to call it a success or failure, but you're already accepted at two schools with excellent employment prospects (and both of them do well in the federal clerkships game). 2/3 of your apps are still undecided at this stage. Hold steady and see where the accept...

Re: How Can I Find a Second Data Point to Estimate Class Rank?

I don't think you even have the median data point, but you can guess it's likely on the upper end of the range given for first-year courses. Based on how my own class's distribution looked after one semester, our median was 2/3 of the way from the middle of the distribution for individual classes to...

Re: 3.4/161/ LGBT-URM Chances at Duke Law

I echo what others have said. The fact that you took the LSAT cold is further evidence that you should retake. A 161 is a pretty good score if you didn’t study. You could probably get to at least a 165 with just a few weeks of study, and you could almost certainly get a 170 if you’re willing to put...

Re: Non-traditional student looking for advice/feedback

Well, you're going to be a splitter no matter how you cut it, but absolutely get that gpa above a 3.0. As someone else who applied in my mid-30s with a 173/2.52, I can absolutely say a gpa that low will be an albatross that a stellar LSAT can mitigate, but not cover up. Plenty of law schools will be...

Re: Addenda?

Yeah, an addendum is really more for explaining why one semester is an outlier (mom died, terrible grades that semester reflect that emotionally difficult time), or why your terrible undergrad performance (like my sub-3.0 GPA) won't happen in law school. An overall good GPA doesn't need any explanat...
