Re: CS career megathread / AMA

Hi! Kind of a strange question, but I have a quick question about pivoting from a career *in* tech to a career in law school. I was really lucky and able to net roughly 400K+ this year in tech and am having a few second thoughts about whether a legal career is appropriate, primarily because I work ...

Re: Employment Statistics by School - C/O 2020 rolling out + C/O 2012-2019 data

I did notice that my class (2020) seemed to have a large number of federal clerkships. I only personally knew two people still unemployed pre-Covid (so like March 2020) and both were at the bottom of the class (so I’d heard).

UVA for $110k is an excellent outcome (and I say this as someone who was EXTREMELY debt averse when choosing a law school). Congrats!

Re: So you think you want BigLaw?

How achievable is an in-house gig straight out of school? Biglaw sounds awful. it's doable but i don't think you're likely to get an in-house job with a good career trajectory straight out of law school. biglaw isn't that bad in secondary markets. I’m in Texas and can attest that, at least as a jun...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

Would probably go to Duke. But UVA is cool too. Don't mean to press (and feel free to ignore this), but could you provide a basis for this judgment? It’s the same cost of attendance for you, and they’re basically interchangeable schools in my experience. My friends at Duke all had a great time in l...

Being able to squeeze in a nap or peloton ride during a slow hour definitely makes getting a random email late in the evening more bearable.

Re: Long Hours

Yeah, the unpredictability is what makes the job hard. You can't really say to yourself "I'm going to do all of this work by 4 pm tomorrow so I have my evening free to do X and Y." For example, I finished up a bunch of stuff at 4:30ish yesterday, but I got asked to do something again at 6:30 that at...

You will be paid the same regardless of which one you choose, so just go where you feel is a better “fit” and where you liked the people.

Re: 3.4/161/ LGBT-URM Chances at Duke Law

I echo what others have said. The fact that you took the LSAT cold is further evidence that you should retake. A 161 is a pretty good score if you didn’t study. You could probably get to at least a 165 with just a few weeks of study, and you could almost certainly get a 170 if you’re willing to put ...

For clarity, I wasn’t saying he could or should actually write off the time. I meant spend additional time on something if needed. Don’t do this. That’s a quick way to get moved off cases if you’re working for more budget-conscious clients. My teams stop giving work to first years who pull that cra...

Washington State MPT Grading Rubric: Score of 6 A 6 answer is a very good answer. Re: What are the best "canned brief" sources?

^ agreed with the above.

I found canned briefs more helpful for 2L/3L because I was often too lazy to do the reading and wanted to be able to get through a cold call if necessary. I wouldn’t really recommend them for 1L.

Re: GPA Addendum?

So, I think for an addendum (which is what this would be), you would want it shorter and more to the point. I think the second two paragraphs are fine, but I think the first paragraph is too much detail. It's well-written and affecting so I don't think it would hurt, necessarily, but my understandi...

Re: Firms to target for 1L SA?

Some of the non TX-based firms in Houston and Dallas also hire a decent chunk of 1Ls: Locke Lord, Akin Gump, Sidley, Jones Day. Pretty sure Latham and Kirkland still only hire 2Ls, but that may have changed since I applied. Just look up all the firms in Houston and Dallas and check their NALP pages ...

Whether you write your personal statement on the family tragedy probably depends in part on what it was and what you would write about. I mentioned suddenly losing my dad in my personal statement but it wasn't the only thing that I wrote about. One reason is that while losing a parent is very tragic...
