Re: Help Me Decide (Penn/UVA/Michigan)

I think if you're from Michigan, have family there, and potentially want to wind up there long term, then Michigan is a no brainer. FWIW everyone I know who wanted biglaw got it from Michigan. Sure, some people strike out, but it's very rare and I don't think that's unique to Michigan either. And th...

Re: CUNY Law vs New York Law School

CUNY has a 75% employment score on LST, the degree is far from worthless. And $15k a year is amazingly cheap. For that price I don't think there's any real harm in going for it. Other than your life being consumed by part-time law school for years, which does sound pretty awful.

Re: LSAC School Report

I also don't think anyone will have that info for all schools, because as far as I'm aware LSAC only sends it to you for your own undergrad. And, as everyone said, it's basically meaningless info anyway. My understanding is law schools only look at it if you went to some undergrad they've never even...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

Yup, my law school is already talking about being mostly in person in the fall. They're hedging a little on what exactly that means (and I don't really care because I'll be gone by then) but all indications are they're itching to go back to fully in person asap. Wouldn't bank on remote being an opti...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

No way I believe that zoom law school is worse than the real thing. Yup, it's not that bad at all. Lectures can be kinda brutal/hard to pay attention to over zoom. But any kind of socratic class works just as well as in person imo. And it's pretty nice to be able to just roll out of bed and hop on ...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

My point is just that the easiest job to get will be biglaw for a median T14 student. That doesn't mean you won't be competitive for other jobs. But it's just like applying for any other kind of job, there's a lot about it that's outside your control. Biglaw jobs are different, the firms come to yo...

Internships/externships. If you want that kind of job it's gonna help to spend your summers doing that kind of work. True of pretty much any kind of job tbh That was my impression. How about UVA for lower level fed gov work? Obviously, DOJ/SEC etc will be very grade selective, but how about other t...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

Seems like you underperformed your stats a little. I had a slightly lower LSAT and much lower GPA and I'll be graduating from a mid-T14 with only a slightly higher debt load than you're looking at at UVA/Duke/Cornell. But maybe that LSAT flex thing really has things all messed up. I definitely don't...

Re: Has Covid-19 impacted PI/Gov hiring or am I just a loser?

Just ask someone at your law school if it'll affect your eligibility for the fellowship to turn down the interview. As long as it doesn't I think you can and should decline the interview if you're not interested I suppose I could do this. It's just that the way career counselors have been talking t...

Btw my school has the same rule that you can't turn down a paid offer if you want to be eligible for the 1 year fellowship. But that means an actual offer, not an interview

Re: Has Covid-19 impacted PI/Gov hiring or am I just a loser?

Would it be wrong to tell an organization that I'm no longer interested in their fellowship after having already scheduled an interview for it? This place to which I've applied is on the very opposite end of the country, and with my wife and I having a baby on the way and my mother-in-law being dee...

OK then, sounds like you're good. Just wasn't really sure why you were including that info/if you were banking on that saving otherwise weak aspects of your applications. Yea, you're right. I removed it. I think a huge problem for me too is I entered law school focusing on one subject, but about ha...

Re: Has Covid-19 impacted PI/Gov hiring or am I just a loser?

If you're overemphasizing that part of your resume as opposed to why you want to do the particular work and the experience you have in the area that could be part of the issue It takes up like 3% of my resume and 0% of my cover letters. Just figured I'd include the info in case it's relevant. OK th...

Re: Has Covid-19 impacted PI/Gov hiring or am I just a loser?

I'm a 3L with a PI/gov job lined up, but I'd say among my friends in the same boat it's about 50/50 if people have a job lined up yet or not. Nothing to do but just keep applying, that's the game. Lots of those kind of jobs don't even hire until post-bar anyway. The people I know looking in NY seem ...

I wouldn't bother. I don't think it would really help or hurt either way, but your GPA is more than fine as is. If anything an addendum might just draw attention to the downward trend. FWIW I didn't write one for a bigger trend and it worked out

If it's not about money, and it's not about prestige, doesn't seem logical to attach yourself to law Most of what you said is probably true, but this is just crazy biglaw-centric nonsense. There are plenty of public defenders and legal aid lawyers who love their jobs and didn't get into them for mo...

Re: LRAP/IBR/PSLF. How does it work? Let's find out!

I am also confused by Brooks’s response: “ My argument is actually even more relevant for IDR...” Isn’t IDR a large umbrella that includes IBR and PAYE? If forgiven amounts under an “IDR plan” are non-taxable, I would think that fact implies that forgiven amounts under IBR and PAYE are non-taxable....

Re: LRAP/IBR/PSLF. How does it work? Let's find out!

I guess no one has gotten to the end of IBR and PAYE to actually find out whether the forgiven amount is taxed. Anybody who commentates on this issue is essentially making a prediction about how the IRS and courts will interpret the tax code, right? I don’t know if there is a definitive “correct” a...

Re: LRAP/IBR/PSLF. How does it work? Let's find out!

I thought that if you got forgiveness through PSLF, then you got no tax bomb. But if you got forgiveness through IBR, PAYE, or REPAYE, I thought you DID get a tax bomb? Am I wrong? That was always my understanding, and what TLS always said. But he seems to think there shouldn't be a tax bomb period...
