Re: Penn Students & Graduates Taking Questions
I was just admitted (and accepted) off the waitlist! Heading to Philly next month. I can't figure out how to deal with the College Certification Form (https://www.law.upenn.edu/live/files/8118-college-certification-formpdf) - it seems like I need to send the form to my undergrad after I've filled ou...

Re: Michigan Students and Grads Taking Questions
I posted this in the admitted students thread but I meant to post it here! As follows: Housing question - I'm looking into one of the "new" off-campus apartments (Zaragon, Sterling Arbor Blu, The Yard, Varsity, 411 Lofts, Foundry, Six11) and I'm super confused - I feel like I'm missing something. Wh...

Whoops. Realized I should've posted my question in the current students thread. I'll re-post there. Sorry about that!

Housing question - I'm looking into one of the "new" off-campus apartments (Zaragon, Sterling Arbor Blu, The Yard, Varsity, 411 Lofts, Foundry, Six11) and I'm super confused - I feel like I'm missing something. When they list the prices for those gigantic units (like 5 BR/BA or 6 BR/BA), the price i...

Re: DPW fails to go to 200, angry mob forming around smokeythebear
yeah, using other industry standards we get better than COL raises- we effectively get a promotion every year. When I was a paralegal they threw me like 2 or 3 percent a year. Granted, I didn’t get class year raises. But my girlfriends residency program for example has COL and class year bumps annu...

Re: Michigan vs Northwestern sticker (and Vandy with $, I guess?)
To me it was a coin toss, but it seems like NU might give you an edge in biglaw. But I think AA would be a more enjoyable experience for three years. And I’ll always pick the public school option among peers. Thanks Smokey! To me it was a coin toss, but it seems like NU might give you an edge in bi...

Re: Smokey’s Guide to Biglaw Summer Associate
Why wouldn't you just order your water/iced tea/lemonade without any prefatory announcements? Summer events at big firms tend to be a booooooze fest where everyone is looking to take full advantage of debauchery on the firm's dime. If you don't order top shelf something, let alone a drink, someone ...

Re: Smokey’s Guide to Biglaw Summer Associate
Would I be at a disadvantage if I don't drink/go to bars? You don't have to drink, just get something non-alcoholic to hold/nurse during conversation. No one will notice/care if you're drinking a club soda or a sparkling water because you personally don't drink. But also don't make a big deal about...

Re: Michigan vs Northwestern sticker (and Vandy with $, I guess?)
Count me +1 for not reapplying. You have the funding and you have a good outcome for a splitter. There's no guarantee that next cycle you're going to get these same acceptances. Other than UVA you kind of already hit the top of your range as a super splitter. I am not convinced you should quit what...

Re: How to Transition to a Business Role as a First Year
The only thing I can think of is: Try to see if you can do an in-house, legal-ish role? Facebook, Linkedin, Google, Netflix all pay on the higher end in tech (Uber, Amazon, Apple tend to be lower). You might not be able to do $150k in salary, it should be not impossible for your total compensation (...
