Re: How to reach these goals?

There are offices doing post conviction capital defense work similar to EJI and Southern Center all around the country. Berkeley has a list . Of course, OP said wrongful conviction/police misconduct. Post-conviction =/= wrongful conviction/police misconduct. But these orgs seem kinda close to OP's i...

Re: How to reach these goals?

There are a ton of paths to fighting wrongful convictions and police misconduct. I don't think anyone can tell you what your ideal outcome is. Post conviction appellate defense work might suit you. Working for a private firm like this one might suit you. But a private firm like this one might suit y...

Re: Importance of Clinics When Choosing a School

Unfortunately, you can't really choose a school based on clinic. You could go to a school chiefly for some clinic, apply, and not get it. It happens all the time that students never get their first choice clinics over two years of bidding. You have to be happy and have a good foundation for your car...

Heard Howard Law places well in Biglaw, and does alrifht the D.C. market..If you don’t attend the T-14-24 schoos, is Howard the best bet for a black lawyer? I asked a lot of people in L.A., and they all expressed that Howard was my best bet. I can also attend Seattle U( Northwest, born there), and ...

Re: Can we talk "unicorn" jobs?

Yeah agree with everything above. I would also add the importance of building relationships with mentors and people who have done the things you want to do. Once you’ve done your LinkedIn survey, I would try and get coffee with folks who have connections to your school and then keep in touch with th...

Re: Skadden/EJW Fellowships and being a SA in Biglaw?

i have no experience to base this off of, but i wouldn't do it. you will be competing for these fellowships against people who have just as much nonprofit/PI experience as you do, but most won't have to explain away a 2L biglaw summer stint. i doubt it would completely destroy your chances, but i c...

Re: Clerkship Interview During SA

Most firms have a limited number of personal days for SAs. Take one and no one will need to know the reason why. Don't know about the state supreme court clerkship part of your question.

Re: NYU Students/Grads Taking Questions

Anyone have thoughts on commuting from New Jersey as a 1L? Where in Jersey? I'm a 0L but it seems like the answer would really depend how far we're talking! Some parts of Jersey aren't that different from some parts of Brooklyn in terms of commute. But some are obviously pretty far! Yeah, there are...

Re: Harvard v Columbia -- Social Life + Other Students

Just think of all the time law students around the country waste on sites like this. In the periods before Thanksgiving and Spring Break, before outlining begins in earnest, there is plenty of time to have a life outside of law school. There are well rounded people who go to shows, read for fun in t...

Re: Darrow vs. Harvard on LIPP

Googling around for HUD Honors attorneys listed as info sources in their info guide , none of them seem to have gone to Harvard or T14 schools. Housing work isn't generally known for being prestige oriented. Harvard isn't necessary for your goals, but I take the point about career insurance. $0 COA ...

Re: NYU ($) v GULC ($$$)

I don't think there is any public policy/housing program at NYU that is worth 100k. The housing clinic is new. The most relevant course is land use (taught with wagner students) and maybe the municipal debt seminar. Not sure what other academic courses there are to offer you. Furman has rock stars, ...

Re: Please Help! UChicago vs. NYU vs. UC Berkeley

The administration works for the faculty. Eh, not really. I can't comment on U Chicago's culture but this is overstating things. "The administration works for the faculty" is a wild fantasy that modern professors cling to that was probably true of 18th-century Oxford but is definitely not the case ...

Re: Please Help! UChicago vs. NYU vs. UC Berkeley

Chicago seems fairly idiosyncratic. Culture at other places, not sure it’s worth thinking about. I’ve spent time at NYU, and I think we have interesting communities and people. But our culture? I don’t know what that means or how to compare it to other non-Chicago schools. How could you compare to ...

Yeah, I get that. I don't think it's naive at all and I want to be a public interest lawyer too. I qualified my statement by saying "most of us are choosing a professional school with the goal of making money." This whole exchange has also been a little over the top and I get that too. The reality i...

Re: Berkeley vs. NYU

It's possible to strike out as an AnBrycer in SF. I personally would take Berkeley here. Eta: It's my understanding that ASAP basically guarantees you a firm job *in NYC*. Not sure how much that helps folks who want to go to other markets. I'd be wary that choosing NYU --> spending 1L summer in NYC...

Your only big law option out of Boalt isn't going to be only SF and SV. You'll also have fantastic opportunities in LA. As I said in a different thread, basically every firm in LA recruits at Boalt. As I am sure has been pointed out to you elsewhere, Boalt's big law numbers are low at least in part...

I doubt that any school is hiring more ass hole professors than others.

Trying to compare prof availability across law schools... probably impossible/ not a good use of anyone’s time.

For what it’s worth, In three years, only one ass hole professor who didn’t care to get to know students at all.

I know of recent graduates who are Roots and who couldn't possibly have met their public service obligation. Perhaps they are being asked to repay and I just don't know. The fact that they decided to go big law under such a threat suggests to me that they're not paying the money back. Again, I've n...

Re: Full Ride at Chicago

If it's like all the other public interest scholarships, you're not just "morally obligated" to work in PI. If you don't comply with the terms of the scholarship, then you have to pay back the scholarship. This is the standard language in the NYU Root. I have never heard of a Root being asked to pa...
