Re: PSA: Do Not Pay Full Price for a Bar Course (NEGOTIATE!)

I’d be surprised if there isn’t restriction allowing sign-on from only one device at a time. Also you’d only get one copy of the physical course material and there’s a lot of features that are built with one user in mind, e.g. progress tracker, question banks, those kinds of things. I mean theoretic...

Re: Any Canadians clerking for a federal judge on a TN visa?

Have a friend who is a Canadian national (without dual US citizenship) and has done it. Presumably they were on TN then, as they are on it now. However, they had to forgo pay during the clerkship as you cannot be a paid federal employee in the continental US if you are not a US citizen.

Re: Big Law to Government Procurement

If you’re comfortable with closing off future prospects of attorney roles in your career, I’d say this looks like a pretty sweet gig. Hell, I know former biglaw midlevels who left for in-house legal gigs that pay less than that so they could have a 9-5 job. Usually I would tell people to approach re...

Congrats on having two awesome offers - I have to say I’m a little envious! I’d say go with your gut. Even if SU doesn’t pan out or you end up deciding it’s not for you, I think the experience will be hugely beneficial for your career. Sounds like you have the resume/connections to find another WE-t...

Re: So you think you want BigLaw?

How achievable is an in-house gig straight out of school? Biglaw sounds awful. It’s not impossible but the types of in-house gigs that are considered desirable due to pay, stability or upside (F500 companies, major financial institutions, well-funded tech companies, etc.) generally become available...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

Consensus is Charlotte hours are lower than NYC. Keep in mind 1900-2000 is just a common threshold to be eligible for bonus at many NY firms, most work beyond it. It’s not like you can declare yourself done for the year and stop working when you hit 2000 in August.

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

I don’t think anyone can really provide an informed prediction because LSAT Flex is new, we don’t know how much longer it will go on for or if the bell curve will continue to have fatter tails, etc. Yes there is a risk that there will continue to be a higher % of 170+ scorers with the LSAT Flex cont...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

I was in a similar boat as a 0L - with a 4.x gpa, I retook a 171, ended up with 173. Admittedly I retook before I sent applications out so I have no way of knowing if I would have snagged H and S otherwise but I think it definitely helped. It kind of sucks to hit the books again after thinking you w...

I think Chicago and Columbia are functionally equivalent schools. Doesn’t Ruby include a stipend as well? I’d take that and run.

Re: Hamilton + Darrow vs. Rest of T7-14

ETA: Scooped above. The US government cannot hire non-citizens in the continental US by law. That includes federal courts so clerking is out unless you can get one outside of the continental US. I’ve occasionally seen people want a clerkship so badly they took an unpaid fed clerkship to get around t...

Re: Hamilton + Darrow vs. Rest of T7-14

Biglaw is generally the only sector where employers are willing to (or able to) sponsor H1B visas. Even F500-type companies are very hesitant about it, maybe except for some tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft that have an H1B-ready hiring infrastructure in place but you aren’t getting those out o...

Re: Hamilton + Darrow vs. Rest of T7-14

You take out loans the same way most students do, except that they will need to cover tuition + COL and you will just need COL. The wrinkle is that since you're an international student you won't have access to the same loans that US students do, so you should contact Columbia's financial aid offic...

Congratulations on winning the law school admissions game. If you’re an international student, I also agree the marginal cost to take the Hammy over the Darrow is worth it.

Re: Harvard vs. Yale NY Big Law

There are way more senior non lawyer jobs at F500s than there are lawyer jobs so if your goal is just to end up at the top of a big org chart b school is the way to go even if you have to wait a few years to get there. Doing corporate at a cravath or wachtell is no guarantee of the outcome you want...

Yeah don’t write off your own time but also don’t create “make-work” projects for yourself that the client didn’t ask for either.

Yeah dude, enjoy chill stub life while you can. If it gives you comfort, I billed like maybe 50 hours total during my first 3 months. I wouldn't worry about hours until February at the earliest.

Re: What are my chances ?

By all means retake the LSAT for a shot at HYS and greater scholarship money at other schools. But if your goal is just biglaw (which is perfectly fine), I would also encourage you to look outside of the HYS in the T14 as well if the cost of attendance is going to be significantly cheaper. This is a...

Re: Chances at HLS and others

GRE to LSAT “conversion” is pretty useless as an indicator of how you would do on the LSAT, and I don’t think anyone can provide a reasonably accurate prediction of your admissions chances until you have a real LSAT score. That said: 1) you have a pretty unique resume and may have a shot for conside...

If you can write about D&D in a thoughtful and non-cringey way, I don’t see why you should rule it out just because of the topic. I personally know someone who wrote about Magic: The Gathering for their college PS and did really well (as in, snagged one of HYPS).
