Re: Human rights / international public law firms ? Salaries?

if you're flexible about what side of the aisle you're on Gibson Dunn and Hogan Lovells pay top dollar and have very prestigious international human rights practices . This case aside, appellate work in general could be a decent way to do "human rights" work in big law. I know that at my firm (well...

Re: Human rights / international public law firms ? Salaries?

If you want that big law money, how about something like international arbitration instead? It's private sector but still has that international focus. Another option would be to go into litigation in big law and then leave after a few years (when you're more marketable for some of the unicorn jobs)...

Re: How many Ws are *too* many?

I would write an addendum to be safe - the Ws obviously won't look great on your application, but as long as they're non-punitive and as long as your addendum is halfway decent, I think you should be okay. I don't think you have to go into specifics on your disease, I would just say that you had a m...

Re: Do a large amount of plaintiff’s lawyers tend to be conservative?

Nearly all the plaintiffs' lawyers I'm across the table from are very conservative as well.

Edit: compared to the big law partners I work with who are nearly all liberal (might just be a DC thing though)

I'd say to reapply next cycle. You majorly underperformed your stats, and you're right that it was probably just applying late that hurt you. Apply in fall this round and you should do quite a bit better!

I'd go with WE for sure. They both sound great but WE sounds amazing (especially comp/benefits) and like more of a sure thing.

No problem at all (I don't read personal statements but I 100% would have reviewed an NYU LOCI, for the record  )! Just keep us posted and try to hang in there for the next several weeks. If we don't get you in elsewhere, then I'd withdraw from Duke and plan to reapply next cycle instead.

Re: Baguette Applies to Law School

Baguette, if it gives you any hope, I was in your shoes at NYU back in 2014. Was waitlisted at the end of April and got in literally two weeks later in early May, before I had time to even prep a LOCI. Give them a little bit of time, they have a big class and I think you'll have an AMAZING chance of...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

Don't think either Y or S are worth sticker compared to UVA @ 110k Because the bulk of students get BL anyway? There actually aren't as many students from Yale and Stanford going into big law as at other top schools - HYS can set you up for those unicorn PI jobs better than other schools. Check out...

It's at least worth considering - you can always turn down an offer if you get it later. I'd say go ahead with the LOCI!

Re: Should I buy a LSAT Strategy Guide?

I'd get some recent PTs to try, as many as you can get your hands on, and then consider a PowerScore Bible for whatever section(s) you're weaker in. I really liked Manhattan Prep books back in the day (...8 years ago haha). 7Sage is another great resource. Mike Kim's LSAT Trainer wasn't a thing in m...

Re: 179 3.8 t-6

Historically speaking your chances should be very good, but we've been hearing more about high scorers with the LSAT Flex so there's a chance your 179 may not get you as far as it otherwise would have. Here's a chart comparing to past applicants (including scholarship offers), for reference: https:/...

Hi I am currently in the same position that you were in and I am trying to decide between attending Columbia Law school or NYU with the IILJ program. My aspiration is to pursue international human rights law and I feel like the IILJ can provide me with a great network to pursue this goal. I was hop...

Re: PSA for 2021-22 Applicants: Avoid Notre Dame Like the Plague

That is infuriating. They should have found a way to make it work with a bigger class size this year - they essentially revoked students' acceptances. They'd better see a major drop in applications (and ranking) next year.

Re: Plaintiffs firms and lit boutiques

Plaintiffs' side firms frequently hire from big law (and hire people who represented large corporations). I wouldn't worry about it too much! And it shouldn't preclude you from CFPB/FTC/SEC either. I would say to apply very broadly and keep big law on the table as a back-up plan if you strike out el...

Re: So you think you want BigLaw?

I think it's a matter of picking the right firm and avoiding NYC, which I know you want to do, DankHill. A DC firm with no face time requirement, in a chiller practice group, would probably work out for you - or whatever other secondary markets you have the chance to land. Back when we were in perso...

Michigan would be great for you. If you were DC or bust I'd say UVA, but I think Michigan is a better choice given the stipend, ties, and your goals.

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

I think $60-65k is more realistic for your first year in big law if you're in DC (if you're in NY, I'd say $60k). $70k is really pushing it unless you have roommates and plan to never eat out. 64Fl is not fully factoring in the huge difference in cost of living between Chicago and DC. And at some po...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

UVa places significantly more grads at DC firms than Duke. But also, yeah, +20k is adding 20-25% to your debtload but if you're able get 190k+bonus at DC hours v NYC hours or 160k in Charlotte, imo it's worth it. Plus I'll take Charlottesville over Durham all day. But I'm not really a city person. ...

It’s also entirely possible that covid means that law school will still be a clusterfuck this fall. any perspective on the likelihood of there being another crush of applicants/high number of 170 plus scorers in 2021-22? Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

The good news is, even if you go to biglaw, you likely won't be trapped in biglaw for long. The tendency to push people out after a few years is often a driver of the move to government and in-house positions. You're not going to make partner and spend your career there just by accident. Just to cl...

Re: duke, uva, cornell, or retake

Hang in there while you wait on your other schools, but UVA would be a very solid choice here. From UVA, DC big law to fed gov (or in house) would be in play for you. Hopefully you'll have non-BL options, but just keep in mind that a few years in big law will open a LOT of doors if you have difficu...
