Re: really unique situation in law school apps, any advice appreciated

This is a really tough situation, but my inclination is to leave things as they stand. I don't think it would reflect favorably on a candidate to try to substitute a personal statement after the application deadline, even under your circumstances. Based on how you describe the second personal statem...

I don't think any of these situations warrant an addendum.

Re: Chances of reapplication success after declining the acceptances this year?

This is the kind of thing to consider asking Spivey Admissions (https://www.spiveyconsulting.com/jd-admissions/) about - they used to have a Q&A thread here on LSL but you'd probably need to go through their website nowadays. None of us are admissions consultants and I don't want to give you the...

Re: Chances of reapplication success after declining the acceptances this year?

I'd at least take another look at your PS (and have others take a look) in case it needs to be revamped. With a 177+ LSAT I think you underperformed your stats in the last cycle, and I wonder if something in your PS was a factor in that. Recs are likely fine as they are, unless you believe some of t...

Re: Chances of reapplication success after declining the acceptances this year?

Why not ask if you can defer for a year given the medical issue? I doubt that would be a problem for the school. Or are you more hoping that you'll be accepted elsewhere?

Re: Guide for Transferring to Another Law School

Hey @Nebby, curious to learn more about why you picked SUNY Buffalo Law for 1L. Did you know going in that you'd likely want to transfer? Or did you genuinely think at the time that you'd want to graduate from SUNY? Nebby doesn't really post here anymore, but I asked him for you. He says he was fin...

Re: Best Choice For Academia Goals - Yale vs NYU Furman Academic vs Ruby

Placement stats for Furman do look fantastic. And the fun thing about NYU is that ALL of Greenwich Village is your campus. Amazing food options, tons of spots to study, lots of things to do. I was a little hesitant about Manhattan when I first moved there, but quickly fell in love with it (lived the...

Re: Best Choice For Academia Goals - Yale vs NYU Furman Academic vs Ruby

Can you visit, or have you visited? These are all fantastic options. Sometimes I feel like we pretend on LSL that fit/vibes don't matter for choosing a law school (and yes, you shouldn't go based on "vibes" if the choice should otherwise be clear based on $$ and/or what the school can do f...

Re: Best Choice For Academia Goals - Yale vs NYU Furman Academic vs Ruby

I don’t think there’s a bad choice here. I also don’t think you need to go to Yale if you have a scholarly agenda and can get good publications, which is primarily on you rather than your school. Yale will have resources to help you, of course, but so will Chicago or NYU, if you attend on those sch...

Re: Clerking mid-career?

I know people who clerked after 4-5 years of practice, not 7+, but I don't think it's too late for you. I think clerking at this stage could be helpful if you want a career shift (which it sounds like you do). I'd say to apply and see how it goes!

Re: Best Choice For Academia Goals - Yale vs NYU Furman Academic vs Ruby

I'm torn. Yale is always the best choice for academia (and the other unicorn jobs like pancakes said), but Barry is right that the Ruby is a great choice otherwise - free law school!! How set are you on academia, and how sure are you that you won't want to head to big law for a bit? If the answer to...

Re: Social life during law school

Do law students have chance to socialize with other programs' students if one's looking to date not just within the law school? Does dating chances also depend on whether male or female like it generally does in the professional world where it's harder for average guys to have success dating? I'd b...

Re: Social life during law school

Very common in my circles - most of my law school friends are dating or married to someone they met while in law school (myself included). And as posters have mentioned above, it’s definitely easier if you go to school in a larger city so that you aren’t relying just on your school as the dating poo...

Hi all - I am very interested in working in London and have a couple of questions: - How difficult is it to either get a SA in London, or transfer/lateral to London if you have no ties? - What are the routes to staying in London long term once you get a BL associate position there? I think it can b...

Re: Chances of getting in: Sophomore For HLS/YLS

Otherwise, your chances are good (assuming you can keep your GPA up). I would caution against applying only to two schools though. Even with great stats Yale and Harvard can be crapshoots, and you're missing the chance of potentially getting an amazing scholarship to another top school. Pick some ot...

I think deferring sounds like a great option for you in that case.

And 100% what pancakes says - if your goal is big law, then CLS will get you everything HLS will get you.

That sounds incredibly tempting. Can you tell us a little more about yourself? How much time have you taken off between undergrad and law school (if any), is there anything else you could do next year while you wait, and how much debt are you currently looking at for CLS? I also wonder how much tuit...
