So what's everyone doing for 2L summer? My plan is to intern with a state public defender and appear in court. Also need to get started on clerkship applications soon.
Exact same.

Re: Columbia Students Taking Questions

Anyone ever cross-registered for a course? Do you have to pay the per credit cost of doing so? The website says law students are responsible for all fees associated with cross-registering, but I'm not sure what that means... and am not going to cross-register if it'll cost me an extra $6K. Update: I...

Re: Debevoise thread on tls

I have no idea whether this is true or not, but Pro tip: if you’re a person of color looking to climb the biglaw ladder, know that biglaw isn’t for you. It’s dominated and controlled by a certain group of people. They’ll help you and promote you to the extent it will help them signal virtue, but no...

2 qs:

1) As a rising 2L... what timeline would y'all suggest I should be on for trying to get a gig in a trial office? I'm based in NYC--looks like most of the trial offices there start hiring around September.
for permanent positions or internships?

Is the Harlan Fiske Stone moot competition what 1Ls have to do for the LPW requirement? Random but I saw a video of the final round on my LinkedIn newsfeed and it looks super intense...
Lol no. That's an optional thing only open to upperclass students. LPW moot court is a joke.

Re: Columbia Students Taking Questions

Was clicking around on the admitted website and saw that the 1L Foundation Moot Court is supervised by upperclass student editors who write there problems. Is it a voluntary thing or a mandatory course for upperclassmen to write cases and supervise? Voluntary. People do it because it satisfies eith...

Re: Columbia Students Taking Questions

What are the 1L schedules like in terms of class times and hours spent in class? I know the specific times would depend on your section, but are there times when nearly everyone is in class or is it more random than that? You'll almost certainly be in class for some time period between 9:10 and 12 ...

Re: Columbia Students Taking Questions

Have 1L spring grades always been due to the registrar June 1st or is that a new deadline (thought I saw June 15 from earlier threads on TLS)?

Re: Columbia Students Taking Questions

Where do most people who live near campus get their groceries? Depends where you live. If you're below 116th, most people will go to either Westside (on 110th) or Morton Williams (114th), both on Broadway (Westside is considered generally better afaik). I've heard that people who live closer to 120...

How do you go about forming study groups within your section? Is their a formal sign up process or is it more about organically making friends to study with?
Never heard of a formal sign up process. Just talk to people and ask them if they wanna study together.

Re: Columbia Students Taking Questions

Ah...it all just made sense to me that the law school is just one building. I had pictured it as a mini college campus all along, with classes in different buildings in addition to JG. Thanks for this! It's technically 3 buildings--JG, Big Warren, Little Warren (both of which are across the street ...

Re: Clerks Taking Questions

0L interested in PI, particularly major market PD work or impact lit on issues of prisoners rights (which I know is way more niche/unicorn than PD work -- this may be more a long-term goal) How helpful is a fed. district or COA clerkship for PI hiring? Can an A3 clerkship open up positions in PI or...
