Re: I'm a Public Defender AMA

As nony says, old boys clubs of the corporate predominantly white/male/rich world is very different from the world of indigent defense. The bolded part of my comment is referring to: https://blackvoicenews.com/2010/01/21/whites-calling-blacks-by-first-names/ Of course not every public defender is wh...

Re: I'm a Public Defender AMA

Question: the etiquette of addressing clients. Both PD offices I have interned at have an official policy of always addressing a client as "Mr. X" or "Mrs. Y" or "Ms. Z." In person, in writing, and over the phone. I find this to be somewhat socially awkward and running against my down to earth natu...

Re: SCOTUS and Other Big Cases

I can't believe (tho I can) that Thomas wrote this, and even Gorsuch thought it was too much and didn't join this part: In sum, as other Members of this Court have recognized, Batson charted the course for eliminating peremptory strikes. See, e.g., Rice v. Collins, 546 U. S. 333, 344 (2006) (BREYER,...

But you don't have the right to a representative jury, just a representative venire, so while lol wrong in so many ways, Thomas is right that you're invoking the juror's right

Re: Public Interest Megathread for T14s (employment data, resources, testimonials)

It's a hard question to answer. The only ideal path is trying to get a Skadden fellowship and getting your foot in the door. If not, then two years clerking for district court and COA and then trying to go straight to impact lit is common, but you may end up at a firm for a bit. Sure there's a ton ...

Re: Public Interest Megathread for T14s (employment data, resources, testimonials)

There's just not a ton of entry level positions in impact lit (funding, amount of training needed, fewer positions, etc.) Most PI entry level type of gigs are in direct legal services which has a skill set that doesn't translate over to impact lit as much as other types of lit (mostly biglaw where y...

I'm pretty sure CLS vaguely threatened things like this re reneging on judicial 1L summer positions but I'm positive they wouldn't ever enforce a dumb policy like that

February 2019 DC Bar Exam FYI

Beware... 1/11/2019 Based on all available information at this time, we are still planning to administer the February 2019 bar examination as scheduled. However, we are closely monitoring any new developments with the federal government shutdown; and the status of the scheduled exam could change. We...

Yes. It's the early semester and it's two days of classes -- you skip.

Re: Importance of Clinics When Choosing a School

I think depending on your career choice/trajectory, clinics can be super super important. Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee you’ll get into a clinic, the faculty running the clinic retires/goes on sabbatical, or the clinic just ends up not being a good fit for you.

Re: Public Interest Megathread for T14s (employment data, resources, testimonials)

So do NYU/CLS now have the best LRAPs aside from maybe Yale and Stanford? Certainly they provide the most flexibility by providing both PSLF and non-PSLF options with fairly generous salary allowances, dependent allowances, etc. It seems like NYU still has its one-time payment for those in the PSLF...

Re: Student Loans: Payment Options and Numbers

Ah okay so there's nothing else I should be doing then?

My LRAP program is unrelated to PSLF. I'm enrolled in PAYE, so my payment is pretty low, but my law school cuts me a check to make the payments as if I'm in a 10-year standard -- so im paying 2k+ above my actual monthly payment

Re: Student Loans: Payment Options and Numbers

Okay dumb question. I have nelnet and am paying in excess of my monthly payment. I want to put any additional amount towards the principal. nelnet seems to be telling me they do that automatically, but is that true? for example: 100k in principal 3k accrued interest monthly payment is $500 I pay $20...

Re: 2L Summer Q

You seem very well informed but maybe you're wrong re State A hiring. You should see about just applying now/pushing it earlier. State A doesn't even participate in EJW for 2L summer? Statewide offices like NH/CO/NJ all do. If you're right, then you need to be aggressive reaching out to State A and ...

If you don't want to practice criminal law/be an ADA, then sounds like you should take the State AG gig. This is for 2L summer or 1L summer? I would be thinking more about job prospects out of these two gigs.
